P-38 Skinners
« on: August 16, 2011, 05:10:30 PM »
Hey Gents,

Earlier in the year I was lucky enough to get in close and take some pictures of my first live 38. It was beautiful! And I took a ton of pictures. I meant to post them here earlier (thought I did) but I guess I never got around to it. Today I was looking at some of the excellent skins the community has been doing and remembered these pics and thought might be of some help in regards to panel lines, rivets, bolts and such. Like I said, I took a ton of photos so if you are looking for a different angle just ask and I'll see if I can post it.

Enjoy  :salute

awesome pics :aok

I am not a 38 driver so never really read to much about them, so I cant tell the differences between them :headscratch:

what model is that?

I do have a 38G in the works(yes I am still trying to work out that "bat out of hell") and I could use some close up shots of the panel lines

I know next to nothing about p38's, but it may or may not be a historically accurate paint job in it...

As to its identity it has boosted alerions and dive flaps. From my novice opinion it's an L.

It's an L all right - can tell by the landing light in the leading edge of the port wing.

Absolutley beautiful pics, thanks!

Yes it's an L. I believe it was under Putt Putt Maru colors before but dont quote me on that. It's based out of Tx now and they had just done a lot of work to it prior to this show. It was immaculate. I climbed aboard that thing like a kid on a jungle gym. What surprised me most of all was the leg room or lack of leg room I should say. Im just over 6' and even with my feet on the pedals my knees felt like they were just under the yoke. Not uncomfortable although I have no idea how in the heck they fit a guy piggy back for training. Must have used a stunt midget for the training films. There is plenty of shoulder room and visibility is great.

It's funny, I've spent so much virtual time in a 38 I got chills looking out over the right engine. Felt like I could fire it up and fly away lol!

Ive got some more pics of the 38 as well as some 51 and couple 40 if you guys want to see them. I also have a very detailed photo collection of an F-4 Phantom for you skinners when HTC adds my baby to the game  :t

Well that would be wrong :)  If you are saying it's on a present day warbird, that's true.  But the paint scheme is accurate to a combat bird

It's a wartime paint scheme of Lt. Verl Jett's early model P38F of the 431st FS, 475th FG, 5th AF on a restored 38L.  So it's not a correct paint job for an L but we have a 38G in similar 431st Markings.  The 38 I got in last Friday is a 38L painted in the markings of a 38G.  The markings are great, the model 38 they are on is wrong, but they painted it that way to honor a Headhunter 38 driver they'd gotten to know, who only recently passed away.

so no body has done that?

I think I may put aside the P40....that is a very awesome skin, would it be allowed due to the woman?....I seriously don't know HTC thoughts on this.

That's a well known Vargas Girl pin up.  It's already shown up on "The Enchantress" P51D skin in game.  I'd guess that one in particular showed up on more WW2 birds than any other pin up.
