Axis VS Allies Rolling Planeset Arena?
« on: August 18, 2011, 12:00:37 PM »
Since the current Axis VS Allies arena is currently a "quasi-special events arena" at the present, I was wondering if we could try out a Axis VS Allies arena that runs either a two week or one month war with the planeset representing what was available for the date?

Try it for 1 month maybe?

The month-long ETO RPS was - in my opinion - one of the highest points of AvA.  We first ran it in January of 2006; I believe we ran it one further time perhaps a year later.  A player named Sable figured out how to proportionally reduce five-and-a-half years to four weeks, then put the planes into play at their rough times of entry.  You can find the main thread here:  http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,168482.0.html; you'll have to read in a couple of pages before you see Sable's Tables, and there were tweaks made as play progressed.

One of the surprising things (to me) was that playing the RPS made you realize how long England fought alone.  The Spit V vs. 109F match went on for what seemed a very, very long time.

ADDENDUM:  Actually, perusing the threads from that period, this is the main thread for the first RPS, which was conducted from January - February, 2006:  http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,169178.0.html.

sounds fun. Can we make that happen again for those of us that weren't around for that in '06?
The real problem is anyone should feel like they can come to this forum and make a wish without being treated in a derogatory manner.  The only discussion should be centered around whether it would work, or how it would work and so on always in a respectful manner.

It was time for the geezer to move out of the way.  The new generation has a lot of dedication, energy and good ideas that they're implementing, as you see with the new setups.  Plus, I felt it was detrimental to the arena for a staff member to be pushing an elitist attitude, and I tend to do that.  Too hard to teach an old dog new tricks.

That said, AvA is, and always will be, the reason I fly in AH.  Now I can enjoy it and relax.

RGR that Sir, I think that may have been one of the reasons why I was such a short timer as staff. It was very rewarding at times for me, but hard to let go of some things. I really appreciate the time  (which was a very long time) that you dedicated to the AVA, and was really happy to see you in there tonight.

The AVA is evolving, I see some very exciting things and yet I miss some very exciting things too. Maybe the current Staff could see their way clear to bringing back a few of the old set-ups. Seems even us old guard had a few crowd pleasers. I miss the P38J and L , P47,P51 vs 109G2, G6, K4, 190D9, BF110 set ups, with an actual historical basis.

I am sure they will come around again, given time.

I remember that some sims with rolling planeset also had the latest planes rotated in by date only being available at large airfields or airfields away from the front for a short time before finally being available at the rest of the fields.

This made flying the latest plane more interesting because the investment for your plane of choice was greater.

Yes, we did that in the RPS.  It worked quite well, and was also a way to gradually withdraw planes as they became obsolete.

Hey AvA staff, this looks like it could be a lot of fun over a month's time period.  How about giving it a try?   :aok

9 days in a row and I haven't seen a single person in A vs A.

Might have something to do with most every single ride disabled.

Meanwhile, I find axis vs allies action at another sim.

These numbers from last week say different, not huge, but decent for a weeks play.

AXIS   ALLIES
275   387

Axis top killer: Bf 109F4 69 kills

Allies top killer: Seafire  98 kills
