Sounds like fun but it won't work for me. Online games are not a good idea with satellite internet and the 2 second lag time on it.  :(
DEFINITION OF A VETERAN
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."

The tank mod (forgot it's name) for Red Orchestra is by far the best multilayer tank game IMO. WoT is a bit too much like run and gun for me. It's been a while since I played RO, so I dunno if there is still many active players but it was by far the most fun I had playing tanks. I never cared for the actual game but the tank mod was pretty nice.

The game was pretty popular out side the US so lots of Russians, Germans, Fins ect played so it kinda added to the immersion when hearing them on coms. Pretty good vid from the game with 2 guys working together and killing quite a few b4 going down. They used deflection positioning pretty damn good in this vid.

That's pretty much the deal. You start out with the tracked equivalent of an M8 (37mm) going against tanks with 75's. You have to die HUNDREDS of times to slowly build up points for your tank, buying little doo-hickys, until you progress to the NEXT tank....which in turn, is matched up against even HARDER tanks than you faced before. (This can be cured by giving them money  :noid) I finally gota a tank with a 75mm (Grant (Lee? I forget)....REALLY, was outclassed in 1942 in North Africa)...and I'm facing Tigers and frikkin KV's (had NEVER heard of the KV--Russian tank) I could drive up to a KV....fire point blank from the side...wait 5 seconds or so to reload...fire again....meanwhile, the guy in the KV kills all the people around him one by one...I'm still plugging away with my trusty 75...he goes to the kitchen, gets a beer, takes a dump..reads newspaper...I'm STILL @#@$#@@$# plugging away at him....he finally gets tired of the noise, swings his gun around, kills me with 1 shot :bhead. At the point, I concluded it was gonna be a VERYYYY long time before I enjoyed this game, if ever. (Also missed blabbing with people on local...200, etc. That really doesn't happen there, different sort of environment)

bj229r,

re: KV-1, from wikipedia:
Quote
On August 14, 1941, the vanguard of the German 8th Panzer Division approached Krasnogvardeysk (Gatchina) near Leningrad (St Petersburg), and the only Soviet force available at the time to attempt to stop the German advance consisted of five well-hidden KV-1 tanks, dug in within a grove at the edge of a swamp. KV-1 tank no. 864 was commanded by the leader of this small force, Lieutenant Zinoviy Kolobanov.

German forces attacked Krasnogvardeysk from three directions. Near Noviy Uchkhoz settlement the geography favoured the Soviet defenders as the only road in the region passed the swamp, and the defenders commanded this choke point from their hidden position. Lieutenant Kolobanov had carefully studied the situation and readied his detachment the day before. Each KV-1 tank carried twice the normal amount of ammunition, two-thirds being armour-piercing rounds. Kolobanov ordered his other commanders to hold their fire and await orders. He did not want to reveal the total force, so only one exposed tank at a time would engage the enemy.

On August 14, the German 8th Panzer Division's vanguard ventured directly into the well-prepared Soviet ambush, with Kolobanov's tank knocking out the lead German tank with its first shot. The Germans falsely assumed that their lead tank had hit an anti-tank mine, and failed to realize that they had been ambushed. The German column stopped, giving Kolobanov the opportunity to destroy the second tank. Only then did the Germans realize they were under attack, but they failed to find the source of the shots. While the German tanks were firing blindly, Kolobanov knocked out the trailing German tank, thus boxing in the entire column.

Although the Germans correctly guessed the direction of fire, they could only spot Lieutenant Kolobanov's tank, and now attempted to engage an unseen enemy. German tanks moving off the road bogged down in the surrounding soft ground, becoming easy targets. 22 German tanks and 2 towed artillery pieces fell victim to Kolobanov's No. 864 before it ran out of ammunition. Kolobanov ordered in another KV-1, and 21 more German tanks were destroyed before the half-hour battle ended. A total of 43 German tanks were destroyed by just five Soviet KV-1s (two more remained in reserve).

After the battle, the crew of No. 864 counted a total of 135 hits on their tank, none of which had penetrated the KV-1's armour. Lieutenant Kolobanov was awarded the Order of Lenin, while his driver Usov was awarded the Order of the Red Banner.

The Soviet victory was the result of a well-planned ambush in advantageous ground and of technical superiority. Most of the German tanks in this battle were Panzer IIs, armed with 20 mm guns, and a few Panzer IIIs armed with 37 mm KwK 36 L/46.5 guns. The German tank guns had neither the range nor the power of the 76 mm main gun of a KV-1, and the narrower track width of the German tanks caused them to become trapped in the swampy ground.

Well there you go--37's/20's against big tank (didn't know the KV series was out in '41 tho...in fact, before that game, I assumed the T34 WAS the only Russian tank)

Belial I think I killed you today.  :cry

Anyway you guys have gotten me hooked too. I downloaded it last night and so far I've put about 12 hours playing time into the game.  :x

Look for me as GenBeefcake, and if we have a clan/platoon going I'd love to join. I'm tired of getting my butt handed to me in the PUG games.
