Very Strange Sound Problem
« on: September 07, 2011, 11:59:27 AM »
Ok... I have been told my the people I fly with, that they can hear my engine and effects sounds over VOX when I key up.  But the strange part is... I have my external speakers turned all the way down... no sound coming out of them.  The only sounds coming out are from my headset speakers.

I tested it and tuned to myself, and they are correct... you can hear everything just as if it were background noise.

I am using a Saitek Pro Flight headset... and just to see if it was a problem with the headset, I switched back to my old logitech one, and it does the same thing.  So its not bleeding through the headset.

My soundcard is a SB X-Fi Audio (1000)... and is the one that came with the PC.  Seems to work fine, but I still have no explanation as to why I am getting "feedback" over my mic, when there should be none.

I have tried every audio and voice setting in the game, and combination of them that I can think of... and the problem wont go away.

During normal conversation its not really a problem, but when in a situation such as a dogfight, where there are a lot of people talking on vox, they hear all of that coming back to them when I key up.

Any ideas?

Check the devices the game is using for sound/mic in the Options->Preferences->Game Sounds panel.

This is my current sound setup, but it makes no difference how I set them... its the same problem.  Also... if I tune to myself, and hold down the key, I get an endless feedback loop... like it keeps hearing the sound through the mic and repeating it.

If the same device is used for all sound playback and recording, then I can see where mic would also be playing back other game sounds.

What device options are there for the microphone?

My other option for the mic is "Microsoft Sound Mapper".  And my other options for Headset and speakers are "Primary Sound Driver".  I tried changing those settings too and making them not the same... no change.

Add this to the list of oddities.... mic TOTALLY unplugged... I key up, and I STILL hear my engine sounds and STILL get the endless feedback loop on the vox beep.

I can see why.  The game is using the playback device as the recording device.  So all sounds are going to play through any device.

Again, what devices are available for the "Microphone"?

My other option for the mic is "Microsoft Sound Mapper".  And my other options for Headset and speakers are "Primary Sound Driver".  I tried changing those settings too and making them not the same... no change.

That was my other option for MIC... (sorry... you must have missed it when I made the second past)  but... I found the problem. (DUH)...

I have this interface for my soundcard...  The first image is how I had it set (note the circled area).  Once I changed it to how it shows in the second image, the problem went away.  Not sure when or how this changed, but once I changed it, problem fixed.  So basically it was doing just what you thought it was, just in a different spot... not in the game settings.  Thanks for helping, but it appears the screwup was totally on my end.  I'm sure you are shocked  :D
