Frame 1
The Channel Dash, (codenamed Operation Cerberus by the Germans),
was a major naval engagement during World War II in which a German
Kriegsmarine squadron consisting of both Scharnhorst class battleships,
and heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen along with escorts, ran a British blockade
and successfully sailed from Brest in Brittany to their home bases in
Germany via the English Channel.
The beginning of the journey was full of luck for the Germans,
as they avoided notice of the British patrols until almost
halfway of the trip. First attacks on the Scharnhorst occurred
only slightly after noon on the 12th of February, 1942.
RAF Bomber Command did not have bombers at hand in the
first wave, so the attacks were made with torpedo bombers,
torpedo boats andcoastal artillery. This frame represents
the first attack wave.
