do you know how big of a fine it is if you get caught without the cats?  also, with todays cats, there really is no need to remove them on most cars.

No fine, 100% legal in my state. and it makes a HUGE performance difference especially on these cars which have a very very restrictive cat.

Nice R-33 Skyline man. i always thought they were illegal in some states or in the US alone due to the US emissions laws blah blah blah. stupid laws. with those laws in place we will never see most of the great cars from around the world in the US ever.

I wonder why those other countries aren't doing their part to save the world?

thats because they want they want the best cars. now dont get me wrong i would choose that torino, or 71 charger in a heartbeat over a european car, but when it come to the japanese cars! no competition. I would choose the R-33 GT-R.

It's not just the emissions laws that prevent the cars from entering this country, and it has nothing to do with other countries not doing there part, laws are just different. It is mostly the d.o.t. safety rules that the cars dont pass, and thus prevent their importation. things like bumpers that aren't to spec, air bags, Ride height, and so on. However if you really want it most cars can be made compliant or exempt for the right amount of money.

Wow....  :neener:

I figured the BBs factcheckers would be out in force...you know...

"Hey, I sat in a MiG 29 once"

"What was the serial number"

"I have no idea"

"Your full of it"

So I figured I would attach a nice pic of yours truly.  On a side note, my winter project is to take apart a 86' Shadow 700 and put it back together.

Played around with this thing for a while in HS. It was a blast.

This is my new DD, Mazdaspeed6. Currently just a mazdaspeed cold air intake (stupid decision since it has an intercooler, shoulda gone for short ram), Strut tower bar, and forge recirc valve to replace the plastic factory one. This thing just devours the miles on the interstate.

No fine, 100% legal in my state. and it makes a HUGE performance difference especially on these cars which have a very very restrictive cat.

there is no state in the united states where it is legal to remove an emissions device, which is what a catalytic converter is. it is a federal offense to remove them to the best of my knowledge.

Catalytic Converter Laws

Rules for Replacing Converters
In 1986, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency issued new guidelines for the construction, efficiency and installation of aftermarket catalytic converters. All CleanAir converters listed in this catalog have been designed, tested and manufactured to meet this policy.

In addition, CleanAir converter listed in this catalog is appropriate for use under the current requirements of the California Air Resources Board (C.A.R.B.).
E.P.A. guidelines state that replacement converters may be installed only in the following situations:

1. The vehicle is missing a converter
2. A state or local inspection program has determined that the existing converter needs replacement
3. Vehicles manufactured prior to 1996 must have more than 50,000 miles, and a legitimate need for replacement must be established and documented
4. In cases of OBD Il-equipped vehicles (1996 and later), the O.E. manufacturer's 8-year/80,000-mile warranty must have expired and a legitimate need for replacement must be established and documented.
Please note that Federal law prohibits removal or replacement of a properly functioning O.E. converter.

When replacement of the converter is appropriate (as outlined above), the E.P.A. further requires that:

1. It be installed in the same location as the original
2. It be the same type as the original (i.e., two-way, three-way, three-way plus air/three-way plus oxidation)
3. It be the proper model for the vehicle application as determined and specified by the manufacturer
4. It be properly connected to any existing air injection components on the vehicle
5. It be installed with any other required converter for a particular application
6. It be accompanied by a warranty information card to be completed by the installer.

BTW.....last i heard the fine was $10k.

a little more for ya.......

in the U.S. and many other jurisdictions, it is illegal to remove or disable a catalytic converter for any reason other than its immediate replacement[citation needed]. It is a violation of Section 203(a)(3)(A) of the 1990 Clean Air Act for a vehicle owner to remove a converter from their own vehicle. Section 203(a)(3)(B) makes it illegal for any person to sell or to install any part where a principle effect would be to bypass, defeat, or render inoperative any device or element of design of a vehicles emission control system. Vehicles without functioning catalytic converters generally fail emission inspections. The automotive aftermarket supplies high-flow converters for vehicles with upgraded engines, or whose owners prefer an exhaust system with larger-than-stock capacity.[14]
