Added memory now pc shuts down
« on: September 17, 2011, 03:19:36 PM »
Here's a question..........I just added 2 sticks of ram to my system I had 4 gigs and now have 8 gigs DDR2-SDRAM PC2-6400 (399MHz)  -  [DDR2-800].  A total of 4 sticks 2 gigs each.  I made sure to get same speed and all but now after about 5 minutes of game playing (either AH, Starcraft or Wow) the pc goes into sleep mode.  Yes I could take the 2 new sticks out and it should work, but while I had the box open I went ahead and blew out the dust and crap with canned air.  Could the dust have gotten somewhere it shouldn't have?  I'd rather keep the extra memory in since the whole machine seems to run better except for this.  Is there something in Windows 7 I need to do since I added memory.

The title says your pc shuts down, but then you say it goes into sleep mode. Anyway, you can disable sleep mode from power management.

If it were for the dust getting to a wrong place, you'd at least suffer a bsod or you could not boot at all.

As for an explanation of why, I'd be glad to hear one, too.

I've got an older system by today's standards that still runs the game well by my standards.

Run memtest86.
Download: http://www.memtest86.com/memtest86-4.0a.iso.zip (<this link is for windows only)
Burn it to a cd and boot from the cd.
I bet you got a bad stick of memory.

RAM needs to be perfectly matched.  Different manufacturers even with matching speeds can still cause problems.

Best bet would be to return the set you just bought and buy a new set of 4, toss the old 2 or give them to someone else.

Rink I found the problem, there was a clump of dust blocking the vid card from spinning.  I took the card out and used the inboard card and things worked ok.  I cleaned the vid card fan and reinstalled it, so far so good.

well that sounds like good news, jolly!

is there any reason you are reporting your PC6400 DDR2 RAM as "399 MHz"  instead of the actual "400 MHz" it should actually be reading?

just curious???? it might be because the RAM is not all matched ( same brand/speed/settings/latency/etc ) if this is the case, then your MB will use the slowest speed and report all RAM DIMM's as using this speed

hope this helps

cc.....

it really isn't nothing you should worry about......... not at this time anyways......

you may want to keep a monthly check on it however, to make sure it doesn't drop lower , if it does you might have a stick going bad, perhaps

since it is just "1" MHz  off/lower  it isn't a big deal at this time, I would not think.....

tc, i had a similar reading from speccy on my intel dual core system running corsair ddr2 pc800, and after looking around the web for an answer i found some references that some of the system diagnostic programs report ddr2 and ddr3 ~1mhz off at times. i didn't dig too deep into the subject but, on the surface it appears to be based on translation of the settings in the bios.
