On this Day in History, 04 October, 1939, In Britain... Members of the Glamorgan Agricultural Committee met to voice concerns about "gossip and goings-on" between Land Army girls and soldiers billeted around the farms in the area. A strict 9 o'clock curfew was urged for the girls, aged 17 to 40. Alderman David Davis defended the women, saying: "They are good-looking English girls with the right spirit. Good girls do not need looking after."

On this Day in History, 11 October, 1942, In the Solomon Islands... The Battle of Cape Esperance.  American and Japanese efforts to supply their troops fighting on Guadalcanal result in a night encounter between the escorting naval forces. The American escorts, led by Admiral Scott consists of 4 cruisers and 4 destroyers. The Japanese have 3 cruisers and 2 destroyers led by Admiral Goto. They meet at night off Cape Esperance. Despite the advantages of radar and better radio communications, the American fare as poorly as the Japanese, both at times firing on their own vessels. The Americans lose a destroyer and two cruisers in the fighting. The Japanese lose a cruiser and a destroyer with the two other cruisers badly damaged. Despite the battle, the Japanese manage to land artillery and tanks at their positions.

On this Day in History, 18 October, 1942, In the Philippines... The American escort carriers of TG77.4 concentrate air strikes on Leyte while the now 12 fleet carriers, in three groups from TF38, strike Luzon.

Season 24 Finale Race Tuesday, 25 October, 2011. Hosted by CM Team. This race will be flown "By Invitation Only", and is NOT open to walk on pilots. We do urge all pilots who flew during Season 24 to show up for this event, as we often fill in available slots to "next in line" pilots who may have missed the invitation by a few points. Also, the external view will not be available during this race.

On this Day in History, 25 October, 1942, In North Africa... The Battle of El Alamein. General Montgomery intervenes personally to ensure that 10th Corps advances. By the end of the day, the British have lost 250 tanks, but the 15th Panzer has less than 50 tanks left and the British can be resupplied. Rommel returns to Africa by the evening, just as the Australian 9th Division begins its drive to the sea.
