Playing with fire (literally). Opinions wanted.
« on: October 25, 2011, 09:07:27 PM »
I've always found the plane fire in AH to be a bit blah & unrealistic looking (sorry HTC), so last night I decided to make my own plane fire files as an experiment.  I only spent around 10 minutes on the entire project, so there is room for improvement when free time permits, probably this Friday.  Here are some pics comparing the default fire to the ones I made.  Opinions are welcome.  If anyone would like to check it out in-game, I'll make a quick terrain Friday & put it up for download.  Pics don't do either of the default or new fire as much justice as seeing them in motion.  Just thought I'd share.  Beats another whine thread. :D

Comparison shots, all from in-game with no modifications, except image size:

One last leftover shot

I'll post some more pics this weekend after I've had time to improve/add more variation to the files.

looking great so far! could be more light at the beginning of the fire I think but anyway it is looking awesome! Can't wait to see how it turns out, will we be able to use it client side? like a skin?

When we are able to upload custom terrains for custom arena use, it'll get used in at least one of my terrains, just for variety sake. :salute

Most WWII jet fuel fires are orange - are they not?

That's what I thought.  Could be wrong.  I agree though that the finished product needs more color variation.

I think yours is too much towards orange.  The color of flames, at least the yellow/orange/red color, is due to blackbody radiation from soot particles.  The hotter the soot the more towards bright yellow the emission, the cooler the more towards dark orange or even dark red.  Your dark orange looks like too cool a flame.  You can compare your images with the 1984 NASA test crash.  Search YouTube for "Controlled Impact Demonstration 1984 Aircraft Crash Test using AMK Fuel".  In that video the color of the flames match HTCs more than they match yours.  As the video shows the flame is pretty hot because the convective environment mixes in a lot of air with the fuel giving a hot flame.  It would look better if it is more bright yellow towards the lead end.  (It can get more towards orange towards the tail as more air entrains and cools the flow.)

Also, the spheres are simulating vortices; you can see them rotating in the YouTube video.  Despite complex turbulence the vortices are not usually as complexly overlapping as your version.  HTCs less overlap looks more realistic to me.  Yours would look better more spaced out.

Kudos for trying to improve effect eye candy though!!!   :salute

I would love to see a rl picture of a b24 flying in flames, I dont think the flames would be that big, if you want to be realistic.

from a firefighters point of View which could also be different but if your ever look at a True Flame while burning with oxygen around it, The Flame is Orange,Blue,Yellow and Red, and that goes back to the oxygen content around the flame so each flame will be different in appearance.

Nice Ranger but  something doesnt look quite right.  Maybe combine yours with some of the original, yours close to engine, then fade to the yellowish part of the original then finish with the smoke.

if you look the original has close to your colors near the smoke,so like I said maybe some blending of the 2 will give it what I think is missing.

What exactly that is I'm not sure.... :o   I really like the vibrance of your fire effect just seems too much  maybe.
