The p47M or N (even the D-25 and on) would probably do quite well here. The p47 has a massive ammo load and 8 50cal, making it quite well armed even in comparison to some of the cannon birds. It also has an excellent rate of roll and zoom climbing ability. It's large mass makes for a lot of momentum once you get it moving. Speaking of moving, the p-47M was the fastest production prop fighter during WWII. (P47M prototypes exceeded 500 mph in level flight during testing. This is some 60 mph faster than the top speed of the p-51D.) Not only that, but not many planes will be able to keep up with a Jug in a dive, let alone catching it down low after the dive. The p47 was also extensively used as a fighter bomber, and with it's radial engine and large size it could take massive amounts of punishment. (There are stories of Germans emptying entire magazines into a p47 only to watch it fly away.) For those of you who still don't think that the p47 could compete here, the p47 was recently selected as the finest fighter of WWII. (The exact magazine that said this escapes me right now.) I'd expect the p47 to fare similar to the F4u-1d does now, but the p47 is superior to the 1d in speed, roll rate, guns, and (with a paddle-bladed prop) climb rate as well.
