American Caeser .. all you ever wanted to know about Douglas Macarthur.
Lot of things I did not know, great history of the man and what he did.
He truly was the right man in the right place, no one could have done a lot of what he did better.
Like any man, he made mistakes (the delayed reaction to Jap attack on Phillipinnes his most glaring)
..but his orchestration of the Inchon Landings,
the retreat when the Chinese attacked in Korea,
..the island hopping campaign in South Pacific,
..the whole Japanese Post War era,
.. did you know he was 60 years old and *retired* when WW2 began?

Just an amazing individual.
Quirks and all.

-Frank

I often wonder what would have happend in the Korea war had he not been canned.

No, but exposed something sad about yourself I think.

LOL and what would that be?  That Bill O'Reilly makes it up as he goes along was my point.  There's been plenty of criticism of that book already for the mistakes.  Plenty of far better sources on Lincoln out there.

If I've exposed that I think O'Reilly is an idiot, I can live with that :)

This is not a revelation but it is good to see that you prefer the truth to Bill.

"Mr Expert on Lincoln", why don't you tell me the mistakes?

Bill has already admitted there were something like 4 minor mistakes, and one typo, and those were corrected in later printings.  A couple of the "experts" who said there were big mistakes were quickly proven wrong and discredited.  Lets hear your list of mistakes.

And while you are at it, instead of being one of the sheep who regurgitate the soundbites put out by clowns like Letterman, tell me what he "makes up as he goes along"?

I hear ya.

It's as if Tyrannis and Skorpion somehow projected themselves into the thread.  :headscratch:

EDIT: Of course I'm always down for a good pissing match, so what the hell... have at it.  :aok

My apologies to all, but I bristle at lies and conjecture spouted as truth.

Not a problem.

At first I thought "Oh great, here we go with the arguing." Then I thought, "Hey, after all this IS a book thread. And what's a good book thread without a little lively debate regarding the reading material."

So, if you folks can keep it within the boundaries of bbs etiquette I have no problem with a mild hijack.

When you're done I'd like to get some people's opinion on the way J.J. Clark more or less reamed Halsey for his typhoon troubles in his book, "Carrier Admiral".

The Arms Of Krupp by William Manchester is also a very good read.

That's hilarious coming from a Bill O'Reilly fan.

Needless to say we'll have to agree to disagree on him and his work..
