If you can get a V6 to do a job a V8 normally does why not do it? For example take the GTR and compare it to every single V8 car for the same price.
I really don't see anything "funny" about it, I think it's sad that a V8 car with equal performance is twice as expensive.

And by implication a four cylinder is superior to a six because again it can do the same job and is cheaper. I think you will disagree with this statement?

It can't, in order for it to do the same job you need a large 4 cylinder engine and then it's better to have more cylinders. Or you would need to it to work at very high RPMs at which point it would not be cheaper and reliability would decrease.

Mind if I ask what engine do you have on your car?

the gtr is stupidly higth priced, and would actually serve against your argument due to that single factor.

now, if you take the camaro 3.6 liter, or the ford 3.7 liter, at 312hp(being pumped to 323 soon) and 305hp(also being pumped soon) respectively, both in common production line built cars that the average joe can buy, then you've got a different story.

you can roll in a 13 second mustang six banger for $23k. you can roll in a low 14 second camaro for nearly the same price. both of these cars easily outperform virtually ALL of the common "hot rods" of yesteryear. they do it in virtually every way.

now, i know someone's gonna come on here within the hour of this post going up, pointing out the yenko camaros or novas, or the thunderbolts, or the 10 second mopars......but the mopars, and thunderbolts were bare bones cars, with not even a radio installed, the yenkos weren't production cars, and none of them were common cars.

you know how many "reliable" 4 cylinder engines i've seen go "boom" 'cause some schmuck thought he could build a 900hp 2 liter daily driver? a LOT.

I was referring to the regular version for $80K, not than new super cool $120K (or something like that) version.

But let's try to avoid changing the topic to GTR's performance.

dood....for 80k, i'm buyin a vette, or a shelby gt350. both will outperform the gtr...and if they don't, they'll look cool and sound cool losing.  :devil

Knowing you I have no doubt that you'd buy those cars over the GTR. Z06 and ZR1 do have a faster lap time on nurburgring than a GTR but they are a "bit" more expensive.

zr1 on chevys website is 112k. right in between the two versions you mentioned.

i honestly don't see why any of us are making a big deal of the nurbergring. most of us will never see it. i knopw some live over there and can/will. i'd be more impressed seeing times around VIR, watkins glen, laguna, etc.

I personally would really like to drive on there sometime, but yeah it's probably not going to happen in the near future.
The reason I use that track for compassion is because almost all cars were tested there and unlike other track I actually know the times for that one.

yea, i hear ya.  even bearing in mind what i just posted about it, i would like to know what the gt500 did there....i know for fact ford ran it, but i can't find any full videos, or times.

also bear in mind i'm not putting the gtr down.........it just wasn't a good example to pump up six cylinder performance, based on price alone.

did you know that american muscle has already built a 6 banger that'll run 11.9's? i think it's street legal too.

the ring is a useful comparison because its such a comprehensive test of all a car's abilities - slow/medium/high speed corners, repeated abrupt direction changes, crests/compressions, on/off camber turns, plenty of gradients, variable surface quality etc.

of course just lap times dont really tell you much, consider that both these cars have about the same ring time:

It can't, in order for it to do the same job you need a large 4 cylinder engine and then it's better to have more cylinders. Or you would need to it to work at very high RPMs at which point it would not be cheaper and reliability would decrease.

Well it can, because it will propel a passenger car around equally well and the discussion set no limitation on displacement, nor weight for that matter. It's the same principle as your reduction from eight to six. You suggested the eight was frivolous and the four insufficient.

But my original amusement was not based not on the number of cylinders but the format. Am I correct to infer that you have a V6 in your car and are offended?

Mind if I ask what engine do you have on your car?

I don't have a car at the moment, I commute on the train. Does this fact make my knowledge less valuable?

I wasn't promoting the four cylinder as being superior, not for this application anyway. What are some of your favourite engines Cap, to work on and also to drive? Do you ever work on classic cars?
