Spitfire MkII
« on: January 08, 2012, 10:09:00 PM »
A wish I've wanted to put in for a while now.

The Battle of Britain Spitfire

MkII had the 1,175hp Merlin XII and wider bladed props with a fatter more rounded spinner exclusive to the MkII.
920 Mk IIs were built. Of them the majority were Mk IIa, 750 of them, with eight .303 Browning machine guns. While 170 were Mk IIb, with two 20mm cannon and four .303 machine guns
Not as fast as the MkI but more combat capable in terms of climb and acceleration.
611 squadron at RAF Digby (less than 5 miles from where I grew up,) were the first to recieve MkIIs in August 1940. 611 squadron were released from reserves, forming part of the Duxford Wing led by Gp Cpt Douglas Bader. 611 were moved south 4 months later and joined 12 Group. MkIIs were phased out a year later for MkVs.

Only info I know

The ugliest Spinner ever on a Spitfire, and not on all Spit IIs.  Basically they were Spit Is built at the shadow factory at Castle Bromwich (sp)  Spit Is were coming off the line to finish out production runs for about the same length of time.  The Mk IIbs I do not believe had the 4 mgs with the 2 20mm being similar to the Spitfire Ib.  Get someone to skin a 611 bird on a Mk I.  Same deal really :)

Mk IIs still suffered the power loss with negative Gs.  Many early Mk Vs and even some early Mk IXs did as well.

Mk II had a more powerful engine with consequently improved combat performance.  The OP says 357mph, but the speed I have generally seen listed for the Mk IIa was 372mph.

If the Spitfire Mk IIa were to be added, the Bf109E-7 should be added alongside it.

the Mk.IIs should be able to withstand quick trips into -G without instantly losing power, but sustained inverted flight would still result in fuel starvation.

You wouldn't even notice it if they added it.  It was armed with eight .303s.

The E-7 should be added anyway. It is much needed for North African and early Eastern Front events. As both a fighter with extended range via droptank or in the Jabo role with centerline bombrack. The SpitII is a minor addition by comparison.

While i agree with you, i think the E-7s eastern front opponents should be added too. Its nice to talk about the 8th Spitfire or 109 in game while theres no Lagg, Tupoljev, or Mig available. Not to talk about the Heinkel products.

I thought it would be less time consuming to modify existing 3D models and performance than a whole new plane ;)

Maybe I was thinking of a Seafire variant?  :o
