« on: January 23, 2012, 02:09:03 PM »
has anyone even heard of these?

they were a british operated sea plane. here are some specs

Engine: One 2,250-hp Rolls-Royce Griffon 74 V-12 piston engine
Weight: Empty 9,674 lbs., Max Takeoff 16,096 lbs.
        Wing Span: 41ft. 2in.
        Length: 37ft. 11in.
        Height: 14ft. 4in.
        Performance:
            Maximum Speed: 386 mph
            Cruising Speed: 220 mph
            Ceiling: 28,400 ft.
            Range: 1,300 miles
        Armament:
            Four 20-mm cannon in wings
Underwing hardpoints for 16 60-pound rockets or two 1,000-pound bombs
number built 1533

im not asking for it now but maybe something in the future. I think its almost like a P-47 but a spitfire that can haul eggs with 4x20mm's behind it

some more behind it

The Firefly was designed as a fleet reconnaissance aircraft for the UK's Royal Navy, and was derived from the Fairey Fulmar. First flown on 22 December 1941, the first versions were delivered in March 1943 to RNAS Yeovilton. The main version of the aircraft used during WWII was the Mk.1, which was used in all theaters of operation. Throughout its operational career, it took on increasingly more demanding roles, from fighter to anti-submarine warfare. Main variants included the F1 (with a 1,990-hp Griffon XII engine); FR1 (with an ASH radar underneath the engine); NF2 (night-fighter); Mk.IV (with new outer wing nacelles carrying fuel and an ASH scanner); the FR4, with a two-stage supercharged engine and wing root radiators in place of the earlier "chin-mounted" ones; the AS5 (with new American sonobuoys); TT5 and TT6 (target tugs); and T7 (Anti-Submarine Warfare trainer).

Well it certainly seen combat in WW2, although extremely limited - the Fairey Fulmar was more common then the Firefly was.

It started on the HMS Indefatigable, and was involved on the Attack on the german battleship Tirpitz. On Jan 45 it flew ground strikes on the oil refineries in Sumatra, even shot down a Ki.43, few days later 5 more japanese fighters were shot down. It was on a raid that sank a japanese carrier, so it certainly had its share of action in Okinawa.

It certainly served in combat, however only two squadrons the 1770 and 1772 (that I read) have seen combat. Enough to be added to aces high,
but I am curious what the perk value would be for it.

Might be 20-30 perks, while Fulmar would high ENY (30-40)

Ok one problem with your data here, You are showing a POST war version of the Firefly..

The Fairy FR.1 was what seen combat, top speed would be 316 mph at 17000ft.

Firefly was the first British aircraft to fly over Tokyo.

And yes, the Firefly Mk I was lower performance and not nearly as pretty.

It needs to be researched which version flew these missions, His data is showing the Firefly Mk 4/5 - however I would believe the Firefly Mk I was the one in combat over sumatra and okinawa.

Not sure entirely, there is no combat logs I can find for the 1770 squadron or 1772, maybe someone with deeper ties to FAA could research that.

No research needed.  Only wartime version was the Mk I.

Ive been screaming for it for years. Britian was a major CV player in WW2 and yet we only have one British CV airplane and NO! British CV attacker.

Some firefly photos from an airshow back in 2008

The real problem is anyone should feel like they can come to this forum and make a wish without being treated in a derogatory manner.  The only discussion should be centered around whether it would work, or how it would work and so on always in a respectful manner.

I have a topic out there for the Sea Hurricane and SeaFire III, I also threw out the Fulmar just for kicks.

Fulmar was nothing pretty - top speed was 275, but carried 8x 303s and did its job as a Carrier Fighter given it was completely outclassed by everything else at the time in Carrier Aviation.

Ugly and Slow is more the reason we need it!

The Firefly Mk.I does meet all of the requirements for inclusion.  The 4 cannons give it the hitting power of a C-Hog, plus a couple 1000 lb'ers or a load of rockets.  Might make a nice CV attack plane if it wasn't perked.  If it was perked, I'd probably stick with a Hog -C or -4 depending upon the situation.
