Why do People Think I'm Old?

You are no doubt, a person of intelligence.  Your ability to read, comprehend and regurgitate what you read in books and on the interwebz is remarkable, almost as remarkable as the level of your naivety and lack of real-world experience.

That is what is going to round you out.

I'm sure that you could write me a 3 page dissertation on shaving in the morning, including the pros and cons of doing it, the best time to do it complete with sources of reference.  Invariably, your report would lack the voice of experience and would lose any credence with anyone that has read it the moment  they lay eyes on you as it is obvious that you have never picked up a razor in your life.

You can tell us all about war and how horrible it is, yet you have never picked a weapon and stood a post.  Until that time, you are unqualified to discuss the horrors of war.

Until you have walked the slums of Boston (or Philly if you choose to come down here) and handed out blankets to the less fortunate when it is so cold outside that you, yourself are freezing in your long johns and brand new North Face jacket that mommy and daddy bought for you, you know nothing about what less-fortunate means.

Nothing of which you claim to to be so knowledgeable about is worth a hill of beans.  You claim to have knowledge of the difference between the homeless, bums, drug addicts and those that are lazy yet I am willing to bet that you have never walked anyplace close to where these people "live" unless it was on a field trip or you were chaperoned with parents, let alone have had one-on-one face time with any of them.

Mistake you for old?  Hardly.

I mostly think you are younger. You have a pretty good, yet slightly dangerous grasp of economics. In that realm you jump from eager beaver high school right into grad level ideas, excusing centralized planning as how it should be done. I enjoy the banter and ideas, being challenged, etc. Good stuff though as you get old, presuming you join the real world as opposed to academia, you will discover these centralized ideas get in your way, not move them to higher ground. Essentially, older age and doses of reality cure most of those ills.

You often "speak" as if you were an authority on a subject when you have an inkling about the concept rather than a true comprehension. Respect has to be earned, same as experience. Garnering information vicariously does not equal experience or comprehension much less the position about which to speak of the subject. Some things have to be experienced in order to really understand the concepts and have a basis for exchange of information. You might think you know enough to speak about it when in reality you just know enough to ask some questions to those who have been there and have the perspective you lack.

A good example is combat. You can read all you want about it from every source. You will have gained some information but still lack knowledge of it. It is similar to trying to tell a person blind from birth the difference between red and orange. You can talk light wavelengths until you are blue in the face but the fact is you cannot pass on the real experience unless you can see it for yourself. Penguin, I hereby request a treatise on the validity of arguing a stance in which you have no real life experience on.  I would like the meat of the treatise to focus on quantifying the validity of an argument based upon facts/research with no personal experience, compared to an argument based upon experience/anecdotal evidence but no book facts.  Which is of more significance?  Due next week please.
