having more tank specific optics has improved gameplay in ground vehicles.

having slower or even disabled turret traverse with the engine off would also add somthing to the gv war by trading maneuverability for stealth.

many tanks had manual cranks but they were much slower than the heavy duty engine powered hydraulic systems.

Really?  Other than the T-34, which tank turrets were manually operated?  (According to what I've read, both Pzkw. III and IV were powered by electric motors.)

IIRC the Tiger I has a manual turret

The Tiger I had a hydraulic motor.  Granted, it was too small in retrospect.  The Tiger I had a horrible traverse rate at 1° a second.  In AH, it is the absolute worst without a doubt.

The T34 had an electric motor to traverse the turret.  I believe that to be true of all the variants.  I dont have the information handy as to why, but for some reason in AH the T34/85mm traverse rate is better than the T34/76.

I'm not sure of the relation between having the engine running and traverse rate, one could assume that the rate would be reduced or even immobile when the engine is shut off if the traverse motor was hydraulic.  An electric turret might be able to move depending on how it is set up, I'm not one to comment on it in detail because I don't have any info on those specifics.

Best to worst traverse rate in AH:

T34/85 @ 2.5 sec / °90 (electric)
T34/76 @ 3.5 sec / °90 (electric)
M4,M18 @ 3.75 sec / °90 (electric)
Tiger II @ 4.75 sec / °90 (hydraulic)
Panther @ 5 sec / °90  (hydraulic)
Pzr IV @ 6 sec / °90 (electric)
M8 @ 6.25 sec / °90 (manual)
Tiger I @ 15 sec / °90 (electric)

Not according to Germany's Tiger Tanks by Jentz & Doyle: the Tiger I had hydraulics with a backup manual system.

According to T-34-85 Medium Tank by Zaloga & Sarson, until the Fall of 1944, the T-34/85 had only a manual system, when it was replaced by an electric system with manual backup.

Interesting.  I'm glad you posted that.  What does it say about the T34/76? (1941,1943)?  Does it give traverse rates???  If the T34/76 is manual, I'd be willing to bet it has a MUCH slower rate of turret traverse that what is represented in AH.

I don't have a definitive reference about the T-34/76 turret traverse, but a number of web sites call it electric with a manual backup, so I stand corrected.  My mistake.   :salute

I would be worried about anything which further reduces GV performance, including further turret traverse penalties.  GVs are still very much mice to the AC cats.  Now that we have the eagle-eyed Storch local to each base, there is practically no chance for a “stealth” component in GV-versus-GV fights.  When a base starts flashing, I no longer up a GV first thing, but instead a Storch.  I always find them - it's too easy.

Overall, I find the new GV rules less enjoyable than the old, despite the apparent historicity of the gunsights, etc.  Not sure why, but it probably has something to do with the fact that normal tanks (no gunsight magnification) now have to get much closer to see well enough to get kills, and therefore need to drive much longer maneuver into a position of advantage, further exposing them to detection by any AC in the vicinity.  (I am discounting the spawn camp kill-fests, and lying in wait on the path to a base.  Maneuvering for advantage against another GV is now much less common in my experience.)  I no longer get most of my GV perk points from kills using non-perked GVs, but instead from base resupply (…).
