htc - Bump mapping terrain textures?
« on: May 24, 2012, 02:17:02 PM »
Do we have the same capability to add bump mapping files to our ground textures that the skiners have?

And if so, does it follow the same file system.

I noticed your bump mapping instructions in the skinners thread linked below:

Thanks

Yes we can.  I do it with all terrains now.  In your texsrc folder create a 64x64 .bmp named gndbump0 or gndbump1, depending on the texture set your are using.  Start off with the 64x64 grayscale .bmp being RGB128,128,128.  This solid color will give you no ground bumping at all.  If you edit the .bmp with lighter & darker shades of gray, it will change the ground bumping effect.  This single .bmp affects all the textures in the terrain i.e. one ground bump pattern per terrain.  I assume you can use a larger .bmp, but that is what Skuzzy told me to use my first time I did it.  I prefer to remove the ground bumping when using custom textures because it blurs them so badly when seen from the air.  This method removed the ground bumping regardless of a player's individual graphic settings. :salute

Thanks Ranger  :salute

Really weird that one bump texture affects all of them and that it's only 64x64. I can see why you wouldn't use it. I was hoping that we'd also have the height and depth txt file, though the specular file wouldn't make any sense.

I'm curious, did you try 512x512 and name each one for the nttxxxx?

Never mind, I think I see why that won't work in this version of AH.

I used 64x64 because I was using a solid color to remove the ground bump. I imagine it would work with a larger size if you were creating a detailed ground bump.
