The squad name can only be edited by the squad commander (or anyone in the squad he gives permissions). In order to have a squad commander you need the squad to be created. Creation will only occur when one player invites another who has accepted.
At that point you will be able to enter a squad name.
Granted that it is visually confusing that the cursor is in the text area.
