Last Monday I had to put my black lab down. He had cancer which is fairly common in the breed.

He was getting old like me. He was a retired hunter, sharp on commands, my best friend.

I sure miss Zeke!
Sorry to hear about this, we are going through a similar thing now with my wifes seeing eye dog a female black lab called Whisper.
We have had some test results back but they want to do more next month before making a decision.

My wife is a Lions Club member and gives talks to different clubs about guides dogs and raises money for them.

Im sorry dude. I went thru it myself and never really got over it. This is my Cayenne. We were so close I told my wife when Im gone to spread my ashes where I spread his. A farm we used to hunt birds together. As I held him for a final time I told him we'd be together again and I always keep my promises.

We had a pair of ferrets. I got them when my wife was going through chemo / radiation therapy. They were a great source of amusement for her while she was recuperating. Anything to help her laugh and get away from the cancer and it worked. Slinky and Blondie went to live with one of the grandkids when we went on the road and had a great time at their house too.

Our GSD Bailey,  He was a rescue and one very sick puppy when we got him.  His ears were actually up until he managed to pick up a secondary internal infection after getting rid of his initial parasites.  So now he has gull wing ears :lol. He's 8 now and very healthy for a GSD his age, European stock helps quite a bit I'm sure.  He get's dropped off at my mom's house when me and my wife go to work, "doggy daycare" :D.  My mom who was always a big dog lover, wouldn't have it any other way.  She'll worry about him being bored :lol.  We don't have any kids, so this is as close as we get.

Shuff, sorry to hear about your lab.  I know it's tough and takes a while to get over.  I've been there with my last dog, a GSD/Collie mix which ended up with bone cancer and had to be put down, took me a long time to get over that.

  Cool Mav!

Sorry to hear about Lucy,it is always tough but you did what you had to.  A few years back I got a beautiful Staffie, she was a rare redsmut color and came from champion lines. Needless to say I paid alot of money for her but thats not the point. When she was about 2 she developed epilepsy and started having seizure. They were frightening to see happen and it look longer and longer for her to recover from each event. So sad to see her have to look around to find things like her food bowl or the door. We tried everything to save her but nothing worked so much like you I made the decision to put her to sleep and held her as she passed.

Wasnt easy but my dogs have always deserved the best I can give and I'd make the decision again when the time comes for the girls I have now!

Minnie the Transvestite Cockatiel.

She has been in my family for five years after my previous parrot Artu (named after R2-D2) was killed after a kitchen fire forced my dad to run outside with Artu on his shoulder, Artu, spooked by the flames flew off. There was a storm later that night that a domesticated bird could not survive. Mom, decided that she couldn't live without a parrot in the house. And so we found this little monster.

We had several to chose from, boys and girls. We had to pick one.

The boys whistled and looked striking while the girls sat composed socialising with eachother, interacting with us when approached but paying us no mind... except one.

The most colourful of the girls, and the biggest of them, and as it would seem the most energetic, wandered over the kitchen surface, engineered a wierd semi assisted jump and landed on mums stomach .... WHILE STANDING. She then proceeded to rocket climb UP mum and then CLIMBED DOWN her shoulder and start furiously wrestling with her wedding ring. While doing that she noticed dads watch, JUMPED FROM PERSON TO PERSON. And then began trying to chew the strap. When we swatted her... she immediately ran up arms and started talking to us, whistling and so on.

It was no contest who we chose to take home.

We asked why she was so colourful as guys are generally the only ones with significant colour. She is a Pied, meaning she has male feathers but a female anatomy... so we named her Minnie the Tranny. And the name has stuck.

She and I were rivals for mums attention most of the time, and she became that, annoying little sister no one likes...

Then mum died of a Heart attack and Minnie and I were left together with only eachother for company (besides dad, who minnie REALLY doesn't like), SHe is my little birdie, and now my best friend. And treats me like every woman treats a young teenager with a fast mouth and an attitude... contempt.
