Gentlemen, The Russians don't know where ANY of our submarines are....

Since well before the days of the 688 class, our boomers have been off the coast of Russia. The Soviets understood that, and they still couldn't find them. Soviet subs visit Cuba on a regular basis, and have been plying the gulf for years. The Akula is a quiet boat (by Russian standards). Unless we are actually looking for them, it's not easy to detect them unless they make noise and they don't make noise normally. It's not difficult to hide. Moreover, the gulf is rather noisy. If tensions were higher, no Russian sub could leave port without a shadow.
My regards,

The cold war never ended. It just changed.
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

We will pass through the American patrols, past their sonar nets, and lay off their largest city, and listen to their rock and roll... while we conduct missile drills. --Captain Ramius, Hunt For Red October

In the movie  the Red October was an advanced Typhoon Class Strategic Missile Submarine or boomer.
The Akula Class are hunter killers see below

“The Akula was built for one reason and one reason only: To kill U.S. Navy ballistic missile submarines and their crews,” said a second U.S. official.

The U.S. Navy operates a strategic nuclear submarine base at Kings Bay, Georgia. The base is homeport to eight missile-firing submarines, six of them equipped with nuclear-tipped missiles, and two armed with conventional warhead missiles.

Kind of hard to track boomers leaving out of Kings Bay on the Atlantic coast when you're listening to shrimp screw in the Gulf of Mexico.
I don't find this story that disturbing. Then again considering the world I grew up in I expect there to be Russian Subs off our coast.

I suggest the Russian Navy learn to sink their Vodka bottles.  Leaves a trail.

Even if we knew the Akula was in the Gulf of Mexico, what are we supposed to do about it? Sink it? Would not happen, no matter who was President, particularly in International Waters.

It is one big game of chicken; he who flees the area or fires first, loses. This game has been going on for many years, only now you're hearing about it more than normal because Putin wants to be a swinging dick instead of a limp cocktail wiener and the US Navy is facing additional budget cuts in the future (and it hoping to avoid them).

What worries me is the fact we may yield some of our power/position in face of such rash actions. Remember this quote?

I guess I am missing something here.

The press says we didn't know about a sub, stating the information was obtained from US Officials that evidently have no names.  The Navy is not making any comments about the subject.  I guess we just need to take the media word that our Navy knew nothing about it.  I did not read where the Navy stated that they missed the boat,,, (hehehe) .

I am not so sure we didn't know about it, and like someone said in an earlier post, not much we could do about it anyway.

I really don't think the Navy folks are really going to comment one way or another, but I am just about willing to bet the Russian Submarine may have had a shadow.

there's always russian submarines close to shore, just like we always have submarines close to them.  it's stupid to think otherwise.  btw there's also russian planes flying close to the us, just like we have them close to them.

I saw that story df but have some questions/concerns about the story.

The Navy is not going to announce either way whether they monitored the sub. Therefore in my opinion this is an unconfirmed story. The Russians may like to say they were playing around the gulf of course.

It would be stupid of the US Navy to admit they were tracking it and such info would be highly classified.

Ahhh the cold war, we missed you so much. You are the perfect answer to global warming and NASA's depleting budget. There is hope yet.

Hardly, its all typical cat and mouse games. We send a sub 13 miles off their shore they send one a 100 from ours. The Gulf is a fairly big piece of water.

yep and thier cruise missles could have hit us citys  with nuclear tipped warheads then too. You know thats how we got our they actua;lly launched one at Atlanta  and it fail to detonate giving us  just enough knowldge to  finish the manhattan project. thats why the 2 bombs were so different. The first was mostly US  tech  then once we got the bomb out of atlanta the smaller one was German tech.

LOL......as if they even need a sub in the gulf to land missiles on american cities.
