I was first on scene to a plane crash today (here in Aspen/Snowmass).

Here are links to the pix.  Believe it or not, the occupants walked away on thier own before we arrived.  They were badly burned but alive.

I just happened to be with the Police Chief photographing the new cars for the website.

We looked across the valley and saw smoke.  He got on the radio and was trying to find out if anyone had a controlled burn underway.  Nope.. so we headed over to check out a possible fire.. in route we heard dispatch announce a possible plane missing and so on go the sirens (and the seat belt) and away we were.

Many units were running around trying to find a way to access it since there are roads above and below the area but not direct way in.

Brian (Police Chief) decided to try the work roads for the ski area, so we 4 wheeled it to close the the site, and walked in.

We were there first, looking for bodies or people nearby requiring assistance.  After about 5 minutes we got the call that they walked out.. badly burned face, torso, hands, arms.. etc.. fuel burns no less but alive.

They didn't get knocked unconcious (which is amazing with all the trees, etc) and were able to walk down the mtn (away from us coming in) and eventually go the ambulance then a flight-for-life ride to Denver.

Amazing stuff.
The plane was still burning and exploding.. sending a few bits of debris over our heads.

Way fun actually since the occupants survived and we didn't have to deal with that .. just the wreckage.

Some very lucky people that's for sure.  A man in his late 50's or early 60's and his son.

WOW!!

What are the odds that a plane would crash while you, camera in hand, were standing with the Police Chief?

If you ever play the lottery tell me your lucky numbers he he he   :D

Very happy to hear the pilot and passenger survived. Wish them both father and son the best.. burn unit is not a fun place.

Depending on the age of the victims, severity of burns, most badly burned patients die within 3 weeks of the injury, you see, the burn doesn't kill you, your own internal organs do.  They struggle to help 'heal' the burns, overloading them, the kidneys are usually the first to fall victim, then others start failing.  Hope that the father is young, and isn't burned more than 50%  :( Kids seem to survive quite well.  Also, if you are a smoker, your chances of survival have just been cut in half my wife tells me. (She works in the level 4 burn intensive care trauma unit at one of only 6 such centers in the world)

Unfortunately the father is 50.. the son is 16.

both are burned approx 35% so they have a fighting chance.

Apparently the father had trouble unstrapping the son or they both would have walked away with an injury.  The flames came in the cockpit as he struggled with the harness.

Here's hoping they survive to tell about it.

This information is horrid.

“I was the first on be on the sight”… whooptedo…
Alright, and the 1st to be a “look at me! People were hurt, check out my pictures!”

Shut up already.

Have some respect for yourselves, if not the families and victims.

Rip says “I know stuff about burns, ill interject it like I’m a professional! Check ME out!”

God you guys are amazinhunks. Piss off already. You are more impressed with how you found tragedy, and how you post it like your somehow important, than what these poor folks lived through.

Blah.

Fools.

Creamo get a life.

Most of us are interested.. it's human nature.

The fact that people survived this is incredible.  You know some people are happy about that.  Yes it's terrible that they were burned but it's fantastic that they lived.

What is foolish is you thinking you know what motivates me/us.  Maybe you should investigate your own motivations.

You'll note that I did NOT post the pics from the fatal plane crash here in Aspen earlier this year...  it was much more graphic/etc but out of respect for the friends and families I did not.

Sorry if you're offended... you shouldn't be.

and one more thing  :)
If I was in it for the publicity or whatever I would have sold the pictures to the local papers and newsteams when they asked... I didn't.

And yeah.. I'm very excited and emotional about it.  I was there and expected to find victims/bodies, etc..
I'm very very excited that they walked out alive.  You should be too.

Your an ass. Piss off.

I hope you don't rescue me inbetween "Check this out! he was Horribly burned!" Photos.

Wlfgng,

Thanks for sharing your photographs.  I would rather have done without them but like most I would just rather that everyone could die peacefully in advanced old age, without pain and surrounded by loved ones.  Unfortunately, as your photo cleary remninds us, this is not the case.

Forgot to add this...

If I was in it for the publicity or whatever I would have...

Lets see, NOT posted it in the Aces High General Forum instead of, say Off Topic like this morbid crap might have at least some point?
