I feel a need to try and top you on this.  Some doctors seem to become clueless when it comes to medical issues as well.  2 examples.

During my time with the NSP I had two experiences with doctors that made me wonder if they were insane or just retarded.

The first incident happened in front of the area I worked at, it had a interstate type highway with grade intersections.  A toyota corolla pulled out in front of a F150 that was traveling about 70mph.  Unlucky for us a doctor happened to stop and help.  After we got the driver out of her corolla and onto a backboard it was time to strap her onto it.  Everything went smooth aside from her left leg.  The doctor kept trying to force her leg straight in order to secure her better.  He failed to take into consideration the fact that she would scream louder every time he tried to straighten her leg.  He also failed to notice the large and bloody hole in her jeans about 6" above her knee joint.  We had words after she left in the helicopter to say the least.

Experience #2.
I separated my shoulder while skiing.  Went to the hospital after my shift ended and got some xrays taken.  Then more xrays.  Then xrays of me holding a bucket of sand with my injured arm.  Every xray photo taken showed an obvious difference between my right and left collarbone.  One side it was flush with the rest of my shoulder, on the other it was obviously above the rest of my shoulder.  He showed my coworker and I the xrays eventually while trying to explain that he couldn't see anything wrong.  He was quite embarrassed when we both pointed to the problem as soon as he held up the first xray.
That was definitely $500 well spent (sarcasm).

I will go on a limb and say that there is a definite percentage that are like this.  There are many medical and legal professionals that aren't as well educated in their field as their license may lead folks to believe.  There are countless ways to cheat on important exams and even more ghost writers for hire to complete important papers.

This does not even touch on the fact that every graduation class has a student at the top of their class and one at the bottom.  Next time you go for a doctor's visit, will you be wondering where your doctor rates in that group?   :D

Not at all. I don't remember my last slow night right now either.

It's job security. Sounds cold and callous but after 21 years of it believe when I say it's useless to burn up brain cells trying to make sense of the stupid crap people do.

Good point.  My old school, the University Of Iowa sent home over 200 students last spring due to academic fraud.  Basically their grades didn't come close to their entrance credentials and it was bad enough to get noticed.

Seriously man, I have never been there, despite living in a country famous for thirty of years of terrorism, despite years of riding motorcycles, despite years of flying, despite years of being a part time soldier. I have never seen much in the way of trauma. But I have friends who have.

Don't know how I've escaped. But have heard the stories of cops, medics and firemen. Friends of mine.
You don't want to go there. It's amazing how paramedics are so blase about what they see.

I feel lucky. Last time a paramedic friend told me an amusing story of guy who fell on a chainsaw. Ha bloody ha! I wasn't so amused but I like the guy so played along.

its one of those things...you almost to a degree get numb to things, but not really. its funny. hard to explain. Seeing things doesnt bother many in EMS, but it still "burns" them out because it does bother them, regardless of their coping skills and abilities. very funky thing...

Job security?  8 out of 10 EMT can't get a job in Idaho unless they devote years volunteering to "Ride-Along" for free, ie: Liability, hours of emotionally draining, sometime physically taxing, & dangerous work, for free, while perhaps going thru Paramedic training, to again find no jobs, without possibly years of volunteering again...almost as rough as Trauma Nursing.   :salute

It's a coping mechanism.  You get desensitized, many get burned out.  I lost a friend last year who was a great paramedic and a great person, for some reason he decided to check out on us.

Being a doc does not make one rich. There are many who are just getting by.

I took it as he was showing the difference between book smarts and common sense/street smarts. Maybe he wasn't.

Many docs get their license overseas where the requirements are far less. Those same docs can use those licenses to get license here.

In any case I have known some really intelligent well schooled folks who were considered intelligent until they got off their narrow path.

I've also known some non-schooled folks who were extremely intelligent.
