awesome, was it competitive/fun to drive? Ive heard the steering is pretty awful not being rack & pinion.

I looked at the datsun bluebird because it struck me as being like a budget 131 Abarth with its IRS, but they didnt officially import any coupes here, and theres only about 5 left here of any type! If I was in Aus/NZ/US I'd be all over a bluebird.

IRS would be great but I'm not aware of any Grp 1/2 cars homologated with it apart from the datsun, and Grp 4 is just waaaay too expensive to build for (eg. theres a freshly rebuilt 2l 16v abarth engine for sale near me for ... £40,000  ) The escorts seemed to do ok with a live axle, but they are silly money these days.


love the Capri, my dad had one of the first in the UK   they were decent race cars too.

agreed, the Mercury is a fantastic design. is that Sly Stallones? he built a chopped one iirc.

  It was fairly competitive because it was stock,however as you said you could really saw at the wheel and go nowhere..  There was an RX3 that would steal the show most weekends because it was extremely fast compared to the others in class.

  I'm in Canada so we got plenty of 510's back in the day,sadly though most have rotted away because of all the salt used on the roads here.


  I never raced the capri,started getting it setup,some suspension mods but my son came along and I had other priorities and sold the capri...... still a sore spot after all these years....



    

  PS: the rallying done then was purely amatueristic stuff and often unsanctioned.

AE86 would make a great rally car, but its a bit recent for historic rallying. then again it will probably be eligible by the time I get my spanners out, if the drifters havent bought and butchered them all by then

love that 62 corvette, the best looking US sportscar IMO.

Skuzzy, we had a guy in town here that owned the only Honda Cycle shop for about 200 miles around for years. Once he got out of racing and his kids took over the shop he went car hunting for a hobby. He had 2 T-birds, and that corvette as well as a few other choice toys. He'd roll them out for the local parades and such. He use to store them in an old mill here in town where he would spend time just tweaking and cleaning them in his retirement. One weekend the woodshop in the other end of the mill caught fire and the whole place went up. It took 2 days to put it all out, all of the cars were lost, but thankfully no people. I don't think he ever got over it.

My Dad had one when I was young. It was his pride and joy. We couldn't even eat in it when we made the trek to the golden arches back then. He stopped once, Mom got out to mail a letter in the mailbox. He thought to be nice and move up for her. She had left the door open, he moved up thinking the door would close, but it didn't before he hit the telephone pole and put a huge dent in the door. LOL!!! did he cry! LOL! and of course it was alll my mothers fault!!!

No it's just a picture I pulled off the web. As for Stallone's, I read that he drove that one in the movie "Cobra" and fell in love with it and bought it from the guy who owned it.

Car "restoration" can end up being a pain if your chosen ride doesn't have any parts available.

Car's I have previously restored and simply stopped because of lack of parts availability are......

Mazda RX-2,  Maxda RX-3, RX-4, RX-5 cosmo, 280zx, 300zx, 810, 810 bluebird (maxima), S12 200sx.....etc.

Lots of new 240z parts are popping up so that is a car back on the list of candidates.

My current kick is buying rare cars that aren't yet classics but are still available at the junkyards.

You can't be choosy about when you purchase parts or find a rare car....................when they come available, buy then or you might wait 4 years before you see another.

I might try my hand at a subaru like this RX coupe.

Im with Skuzz on the '62 vette. Best body style of vette in my opinion.

It has to be a convertible as well.
