My mom taught me how to drive ..and her words still apply.
She took me to an empty parking lot when it was raining and had me do all the wrong things in it..
ie: get some speed up and slam on the brakes, lose it goin sideways ..the works.
I still do that with every 'new' ride to get a feel for what they are capable of.
She also hammered home the idea of always having an exit avenue ..
..always presume the worst of those around you.. where ya gonna go if ??

Being able to safely go around an idiot who locks 'em up in front of you is a viable skill

My first car was a '55 Chebby 2 door post .. light blue n white ..bought it on my 15th birthday, been drivin since.
Been run into twice ..once due to traffic lights screwed up showin green both ways ..cost me my CRX
...and my first crash ..guy crossed 3 frik-kin lanes just to wipe the front off my car.
Even the cops were dumbfounded on the why of that.
He went to jail.

My 1st car ever was a Datsun Laurel 2.8L Diesel with a whooping 80 bhp output. My dad gave it to me after using it for 10+ years, but the gearbox broke a few weeks later (not my doing, I swear! )




The 1st car I bought was a second-hand Toyota Starlet 1.5L Diesel, 54 bhp. I loved that car for the fuel economy and because it was really MINE!

My first was a 1980 Mazda GLC with a 5 speed and 65 HP.   







Had to let her go when both front shock towers let go blew through the hood.  Drove it to the scrap yard a bit after midnight with the tires rubbing the wheel wells.  Nothing quite like a 5 mile tire smoking burnout!

5 speed manual and self-leveling rear suspension. On a good day it could do 120 mph. I loved to drive it, but of course, it was British, so it would go wrong once in a while. Sold it after three years to someone who could better maintain it.

Mine was a 71 Firebird I got when station at Norfolk Va. It spent more time in the garage than on the road.

My first was a 68 Falcon Station Wagon, 200ci inline 6, 3 on the tree, rubber floor mats, no A/C, no PS, no PB, AM radio and bench seats.

BUT, it did have a 9" rear end.

Three years later it would have the front suspension from a 67GT350 Shelby, a 289 with quad Webers, Hooker headers, Crane cam, TRW forged pistons, and sundry other tidbits up front.  Tranny went to a 4 speed top loader.  Rear end was augmented with 4:11 gears and a Detroit locker.  Read leaf springs got another leaf.

The rear wheels were tubbed out for track days and racing slicks.

It was a great project car.  Ran really well.  Fun car.

First car was a 1967 Mustang.  GT Fastback.

Bought it with paper route money when I was 14.  Spent two years restoring it with my dad.  Hence...the hook was set.  Was a blast having that car in High School.  A 390 4 speed toploader.  Could burn the tires to no end...

Hit a tree with that one and totalled it.

Mine had 13 x 7 Campagnolo wheels, 185/70-13 Pirelli CN36 tires, Bilstein gas-filled shocks, a thicker front anti-roll bar.  Was great fun in the twisty bits.

I inherited my first car at 15, a 1972 Westfalia Volkswagen Camper van.  It belonged to my grandfather who had recently passed away.  He was quite the handy man, and it came with a new motor with only 10 thousand kilometers (about 6200 miles), and a full set of German tools to work on it.  It also had a gas heater, a sink, and all the other stuff that came with these pop top vans.  It would only do about 75mph on the highway, but would cruise at 62 mph decently in top gear, and got decent fuel economy.  I'll have to dig about and see if I can find some pics, but this one from the net is almost identical, except I had the silver VW logo on the front nose, and not a spare.  The little motor purred like a kitten, and everyone who ever rode in it with me really fell in love with the sound, quirkiness, and utility it had.  It was a great camping vehicle as well, when the roof was popped, and the awnings all attached as such, it had lots of room, and you could really stay warm with the auxiliary heater in the colder months in the mountains of Alberta at night time.



In the summer time however, my first vehicle was a 1991 Honda 750cc Interceptor.



For 1991 it was a great bike, it even looks only slightly dated to this day.  I rode it my last year in high school, as was absolutely the coolest kid on the block, at least I fancied myself so.
