Need help!
« on: January 11, 2013, 08:04:16 AM »
I've been learning on my own and have decided that I basically have know idea what im doing. I am available for training most of the time (I am retired military and have a lot of spare time). I can fly ok but my tactics both offence and defense are awful, any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Best advice anyone can give you is two things:

1.) TA time with the Trainers is something you will have to seek out. They are all being sought after by everyone, find one you can schedule time with. Being in the TA is the first start.

2.) Study Study Study! Everything from player videos too buying a few books for reading.

Try starting here:

This link has a TON of great book references

I'm sure a trainer will be along here shortly to help you out.
In the mean time check out http://netaces.org/ if you haven't already. There is some good info there.
Also drop by the TA (training arena) even if there isn't an official trainer in there you can usually get some help, or at the very least get some practice without actually getting shot down.
If you see me in there give me a shout and I will help with what ever I can. My in game name is the same as my name here.

I'm sure you mean 1900...   :D
I can probably get there a little bit early.  7:30 or so should be ok.

Two things you want to know are where to point your aircraft and how hard to turn.

Read the section on pursuit curves to give you an idea of what you'll be doing.
The section on turn rate ignores best sustained turns but AAJagerX can help you with that.

Feel free to ask for specific training too, even if it's a lot of specifics, makes helping you easier too as we can focus on your needs and desired area for improvement.

Sounds like some BFM 101/clinic (Basic Flight/Fighter Maneuvers, FLS beat me to it) would be a great first start, there's a couple films out of them.  It sounds rudimentry, but even old-hands benefit from the refresher, so try to go along with the bits you know already but be attentive for when it comes to ones you don't (or maybe finding an old trick explained again before realising it will fix a new problem).
