New graphic engine?
« on: April 16, 2013, 12:30:25 PM »
Hello.
May be this is FAQ. May be this question already bored to death. But anyway.

Is there any work in progress to introduce new graphic engine?
I thoroughly enjoying game play of AH. I think it's best out there since WarBirds. But graphic seems to be... well... a bit dated.
Just imagine how great it would be if AH will look like this. Now as IL2 series almost dead, may be it would be easy to license their graphic engine?
Modern aviasim can (and should) look like this.

What are you guys think about it?

PS. I know, there are a lot of old hardware out there. But come on. It's 21st century already! :-)

It is.  It really, really is.

It's a niche market with a substantial number of dedicated subscribers with low-end computers.  It would be stupid to cut them out when it's unnecessary.

Sure, more graphics are better, but they're not necessary to play.

seems to me if people wanted the il2 graphics they'd play il2 and il2 wouldn't be "almost dead"  :D

We could have graphics and terrain like this in AH with the current engine

All it takes is the time spent building the maps with sufficient detail

HiTech has already stated that nothing in that screenshot (and the other screenshots from this thread http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,344662.0.html) would cause cause additional frame rate problems

IL2 had stunning (at that time) graphic, mediocre FM and disgusting multiplayer. IMHO. And it's dying (or already dead) because of latter.
There are couple of MMO flight sim in development that have current graphics and decent flight models. Despite them having il2-ish gameplay for now, one of 'em already did attract ~1M people (and up to 40k online). If they wake up and create arenas similar to WB/AH it would deal severe blow to AH, IMHO. And I don't want this happen. I've just payed 6 month subscription :-)

BTW, do I count as one of the people? ;-)

Error, The visibility range on AH and the screen shots you posted are completely different.

Take a look at how the size of trees and how they are fogging in the screen shot vs the trees and how they are fogged in ah.

My guess is about 2 miles vs 18 miles in AH. If you have aver seen world of tanks, an entire terrain is less then the size of one airfield in AH.

2nd how big an area is modeled in that screen shot.

There is nothing in the AH graphic engine that would prevent making a screen shot just like the one you linked to. But many trade offs would have to be made just like they made to produce that screen shot.

i don't see anything in that warthunder screenshot that isn't a result of dynamic lighting effects...and i've played warthunder enough to know the surface textures on the aircraft isn't any better than what is in ah using 512 texture size. if you haven't tried it, install the hires texture pack in ah then push your graphics settings to as high as you can without losing your frame rate and look at the difference between what gets rendered in warthunder vs ah. there is a reason they have low participation limit to the number of people that can be on a map in a fight and ah doesn't...

There is nothing in those screen shots that would have any effect on frame rates. Those shots are nothing but different textures that replace the standard texture set. Along with some nice detail work on the beach.
