Those are fair points, but if you add in the factor of more effective AP bombs like the OP suggested, maybe we would see a few more of the hangar queens that can carry them.

Also, how much of a factor are the 5" guns in taking down formations of level bombers?  This is a honest question, I don't have much experience with the 5"-ers.  My observations seem to indicate that bombers that are flying low enough to be threatened by the 5" guns are going to be torn apart by everything else, too.

It wouldn't be good but bad for gameplay. In scenarios the 5" are ocasionally disabled or "nerfed" to give dive and torpedo bombers a chance. But then these are the only bombers enabled in those scenarios and you don't get a constant stream of low flying heavy bomber formations attacking the CV.

In the MA, you do.
If you 'nerf' the 5" you don't get everybody jumping in a Kate for a brave torpedo run - Most will just be happy their 24's will now have a much easier time to sink a CV.

This.

My favorite battles are CV ones, and it is true, there are some superb gunners in those 5"s. However, I think having the same system as the 88s wouldn't hurt, it would give the low level fighters more of a chance to get closer, without the worry as much about the 5".      Right now it's easier to get a kill in the 5" than in the 88.  I got a miraculous kill last week on a poor c205 at 8.8k in the 5".

+1 to initial wish as well, gives more use to those AP bombs that are right now.. are rarely used, since GP's work just as good, if not better.

Just my thoughts.

Respectively,

Tinkles

My father served aboard the USS Denver on a 5.38 gun. He told they were attacked by 20+ aircraft and were blasting them out of the sky like a regular ''Turkey shoot"unfortunatly 1 guy wasn't with the program and attacked from other direction and put a torp in the ship causing it to list badly and only go in circles. They were towed back to Port for emergency repairs and then made there way to Mare Island in the States,
A freind from High School served on the EG Small a destroyer in Viet Nam and by then the guns had been upgraded to 5" 58s and I heard my father tell the story on how great the guns were with fused proxcimatly shells

The 5" guns are just too crazy... if no one is manning them, the CV dies too fast, if someone with even a modicum of skill is manning them, the CV is impervious - not to mention nearby furballs are an absolute massacre.

I really think some overall adjustments are in order.
