My CV Task Force Change Wish
« on: April 26, 2013, 09:28:16 AM »
1.  Double all ship hit points.

2.  Double torpedo damage.

3.  Make anything that is not an armor piercing bomb, rocket, or torpedo do 1/10th of current damage to ships (Normal bombs, MGs, cannons)

4.  Make 5" guns manually fused like the 88s are.

PROFIT.

(EDIT: Added for clarification)

The point of this would be to enhance CV use and tactics required to drop the group.  Right now, a CV gets called in, and someone drops a string of 500lb or 1,000lb bombs out of a level bomber and the fight is over.  The cruiser is dropped in a single pass from a 110 or 410's cannons.

Fights devolve into CV planes hugging their 5" umbrella, and 5" guns are simply ridiculous.  You have a low chance of getting torps on target, IF there are no 5" gunners.  IF there are 5" gunners, you can just forget it unless they are simply incompetent.

General purpose bombs would still be able to kill guns, destroy planes taking off, etc... but it would really require specialized ordnance to SINK ships.

By requiring torpedoes and/or armor-piercing bombs, you put the attack in the hands of dedicated dive bombers and torpedo planes, as well as shore batteries and other ships/PT boats.  This will still be difficult, but since the threat of level bombers just spamming sticks of bombs onto the task force is abated, the 5" guns can go away... meaning the 40mm and 20mm AA, as well as the fighter cover is now tasked with preventing torpedo/dive bomber strikes on the ships.

I think CV groups will last longer, and the fights will be far higher quality with this in effect.

I would like to add my wish of making ever single 5 inch gun mannable. Airfields don't have lazer accurate AI's gunning the 88's, why cv's get them?

I'd much rather be killed by some human player taking the time to judge my flight path and figure out the lead than some random computer genterated puff.

I haven't died to anything but a 5" gun over a CV group in the last several months at least.  I think a lot of people that are dying to 5" guns THINK they are dying to puffy... when it's a player hitting them from up to 8k out.

I think the original thought behind that was that airfields don't sink and take hours to get back into play  :old:

That being said, there was a time when the towns actually had AI puffy ack...

Didn't think of that, though they wouldn't sink so easily if people used them correctly.

Kill the ords at nearby bases
Assume that all nearby dar bars are high buffs and go intercept
Don't bring the cv 10 ft off shore so the SB's can blast away all day long
Only come in close when the base is ready to be captured (Or you can keep the CV safe and bring a goon or M3 if they're available)

when your trying to fight someone  they run to the 5" and you cant dive bomb them the 5" will kill you its impossible either make the 5" less powerful or accurate or make a little less accurate

I like all of these ideas, especially anything regarding the 5" snipers.  When I first started playing this game in '06, I loved doing dive bombing and torp runs on CVs.  Then, as people began to learn to shoot the 5"-ers like Gunny Hathcock on steroids, I failed to get close enough to either drop bombs or release torps about twenty times in a row.  I tried a few more times each year until 2009, when I quit trying entirely.

I miss that aspect of the game!  Heck, I miss going for the money shot with a B-25H, and you can't do that any more either.  In our hellish world where everyone has hundreds of times as much practice as real-world gunners, what was a technically possible but a one-in-a-million shot has become commonplace.  So, while I would be rue to nerf the 5" guns if they're currently realistic, I also wonder if some sort of nerfing wouldn't be best for gameplay purposes.  After all, the 5" guns are often disabled in historical scenarios where the attackers are supposed to be dive bombing.

It wouldn't be good but bad for gameplay. In scenarios the 5" are ocasionally disabled or "nerfed" to give dive and torpedo bombers a chance. But then these are the only bombers enabled in those scenarios and you don't get a constant stream of low flying heavy bomber formations attacking the CV.

In the MA, you do.
If you 'nerf' the 5" you don't get everybody jumping in a Kate for a brave torpedo run - Most will just be happy their 24's will now have a much easier time to sink a CV.
