HTC sponsored squad competition
« on: May 02, 2013, 01:04:55 PM »
Because:

 - Good way to attract gamers. Commercials do little to advertise compared to a competition stream on twitch

 - There's ton of good squads, but little objectives to achieve as a squad except capturing a field (yay).

 - this can't be run by lone players, as we need someone who's objectivity can't be questioned

 - Its fun.

It's called Friday Squadron Operations.

Set your alarm clock.  Would love to see The Few involved.

I think this may be more along the lines of what VF-17 was thinking of starting for all F4U dedicated squads (minus the plane type restriction). We were thinking of having an annual (or quarterly) battle trophy contest where squadrons competed in various catagories (air superiority, ground attack, fleet ops/capping). Alas, we seem to be the only surviving F4U squad in game.

I guess a company sponsored version could have similar competition with some AH swag or some such as awards.

But yeah .... FSO is pure squadron immersion/fun.  :D

It sounds to me like he's talking more along the lines of an ESports type thing, along the lines of the SDL.  FSO is pretty much the worst possible choice of venue for something like that because there would be whining about the fairness of the setup on a magnitude never before seen on these forums.  Competitive gaming is built around the idea that everything be fairsies and equal.

Meh.  Not my crowd, not a crowd I'm particularly fond of, but yep, it's a wish.

fso is not a competition, it's about the pleasure of re acting history and succeed in your mission, competition would be ruin the fun imo. I unfortunately cannot wake up at 4am on a saturday morning :P

I was more thinking along the lines of the defunct squad dueling league but run under official control...

and yes I got a new bbs account :)

The only thing SDL lacked.

Plus 1 on the wish, and got a crew to man up should it be granted.   :aok

who the hell wasn't impartial Nuke?

aside from having a host/referee at every match to enforce the proper recognition of the rules from both teams I don't see how it could have been done any differently.

HTC could have put up some sort of incentive to get some more motivation but obviously there wasn't enough enjoyment from all involved to make it work.

a couple of problems with that theory and, if you look around these forums, one is glaringly obvious. historic flight sims don't attract a lot of gamers unless they look and play like other flying "games". people come to ah and it isn't long before they start squawking about the eye candy. making claims that this game or that has better graphics without looking at the fact that their computers can barely handle the graphics requirements of ah.  they're the "ooh, look the ground is pretty" crowd, and they don't last long around here. they jump into the late war arena, grab a p51 or spitfire, try to fly in arcade external mode, get irritated because they can't, then proceed to get owned by veterans flying around in 109s...then they come to the forums, complain about the graphics, then leave and go play a game like warthunder or (soon) world of warplanes.

Bruv I meant that anyone affiliated to any of the contestants will be viewed as partial some way or another.

Gyrene that's an over simplifaction, do you think the guys paying cs 1.6 or dota give a damn about graphics? AH graphics are not uber but reliable and well suited for competition.

Saitek/madcatz may be interrested in sponsoring ;)
