A conondrum of redundancy?
« on: June 12, 2013, 05:25:56 AM »
This is a wish in the disguise of a question.

Why do the Early war and Mid war arena's exist as well as custom arenas?

The severe lack of population in either sides warrant that either:

- The custom arena's replace the optional main arenas.
- The custom arena's are seen as not a fully fledged commitment by HTC, to be removed at a later time, so that's why the "redundant" arenas still exist.

While, I am currently endeavouring/wishing for the removal of the *paid* custom arenas in an earlier thread, I do not understand why HTC allows such wasteful redundancy to exist in their system. Would it not be easier/smarter to remove the WW1 + "other" two arenas to generate interest in the custom arena section? Which would then take the place of the current alternate game-mode arenas.

Some will note, that this can also be extended to the DA by logic, leaving only the LWA and the TA as the only two arenas that can't be replaced by a user created setup.

The TA, which I am advocating/wishing at the moment in an earlier thread to be a free-to-play arena where you can't destroy anything/anyone but you can fly around and be trained by official trainers or bored oldies with a bit of patience.

By that logic HTC could also close LW arena to generate interest in the custom arenas ;)

No, that would be going against the inherent nature of a MMO design, not to mention the proposed design of the game itself.

The game has no persistence other then the main arenas, which I am pointing out can be reduced simply to two by already existing options/factors, which will reduce overhead (custom arenas are dynamic) and provide a more straightforward system of approaching the game.

Basically, they are not needed because people can offset their custom demands with the custom arenas, already.

lol, i'm trying to figure out what "overhead" you're thinking exists. the servers are owned by htc, not hosted rentals. and it's been repeatedly stated by htc staff that the servers aren't close to capacity even when there were more players. i think they just replaced servers too.

if you're ideas are to some how increase the number of subscribers, they will fall short...there are 3 things that will bring people in.

1. vastly improved terrain/environment graphics (like what is found in retail box and console games)

2. arcade game play

3. greater interest in world war 2 flight simulation within the age groups that want the high resolution eye candy

(i would count subscription cost but, it can be a non-factor if someone is interested enough)

Any savings is a savings.

The TA idea to get more players is a different topic, but I wished to mention it here because I wished to point out the importance of it not being one of the expendible arenas that is replaceable by the custom arenas and thus garner the idea more credibility.

I am simply talking about streamlining whats already there with little/no effort.

Leave MW and EW just the way they are. You don't like them, fine stay in LW. Hitech has been doing this for a long time, and based on his success I would say he has done a pretty good job. I love MW and EW just the way they are. I spend most of my time in MW flying with and against a great bunch of people. I just don't understand why new players think that shutting down MW and EW is such a "great" idea, especially when they don't even fly there. :headscratch:

Its not just those two jimmy, its the DA as well, heck you could even extend it to the scenario/AvA arenas if they made the arena browsing GUI simpler.

If HTC did such a move and were kind, they would simply provide settings templates for custom arenas to allow you and the other guys to re-create the MW/EW arena and maybe you can play with other game modes as well to make something that might actually be cooler then the LW, who knows?

But without said modifications how would that be any different from what you have now?

On a side note, I sometimes spawn a custom arena with 126mph winds in which you take off northeast.

It's pretty fun to try to fly a b17 into the selection hangar and then fly back out undamaged.

Yea, that looks pretty fun icepac. I don't suppose there is a kind of game you can turn that into? ;-)

True hovering doesn't seem to work because, even though you are in the air, something happens when your groundspeed gets to zero.

This means you have to be constantly moving ever so slightly.

Why do you want HTC to change itself to loosely follow how it's competitor(s) offer themselves?

If you will notice bustr, that HTC actually had the dynamic instancing idea *before* competitors, before the tank one, even.

Remember "tour of duty"? (even free h2h arenas provided a level of that, just not automated).

HTC, as long as it keeps one large, paid, persistant arena will always keep to its design agenda. That's one thing other competitors don't have yet, because they were not designed that way from the ground up.
