Doctors inject 6-year-old girl with HIV and smile...

Amazing what modern medicine can do. As long as we don't accidentally bring about the zombie apocalypse, things are looking bright!

Is there a text summary of what happened, or do we have to sit through a video to get the story?  Also, that web site kept popping up windows asking if I liked it enough to share it on facebook.  No, I would never share that annoying of a site with my friends.  Maybe ask once or have a nice quiet and polite button to let me share, and that would be good.  3 pop-up requests for facebook and twitter shares in 20 seconds is a guaranteed way to make sure I'll never inflict that site on anyone I like.

Strange. I didn't get any popups at all.

Here's a youtube link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=h6SzI2ZfPd4

It's a 4 minute short.

Thanks.  Much better to read it than sit through a video.  Very interesting story.  I hope the treatment works long-term and the medical study proves itself useful for a broader range of treatments.

I wasn't about to watch the video but I will venture a guess they are using it as a transport mechanism maybe through recombination of microphages?

No need to worry about the zombiepocalypse by simple injection of HIV into a person but a retrovirus that has been "taken apart" or influenced to mutate can possibly be very dangerous if it get's out of "containment" and into the general population.

I'm pretty sure a lot of us already have SV40 from polio vaccines running through our veins and I still wonder if HeLa contamination of a startling amount blood sera and growing substrates for vaccines isn't the reason we are seeing formerly rare cancers striking the young.

Yes, they used the HIV virus to reprogram her immune system to attack the cancer cells. She became very ill after the treatment and came close to death, but she prevailed and is now cancer free and living a healthy life.

Ironic that you should complain about getting facebook popups while you support Facebook by having an account there... :)

Nothing wrong with a facebook account.  Lots wrong with getting 20 popups in under 1 minute from a single site trying to sell me something or send me to some other site than the one I actually wanted to visit/read.  Facebook didn't tell that site owner or ad guy to have 5 completely different facebook ads all pop up within a few seconds of each other.  In fact, they probably asked the site owner or page manager or whatever to NOT do that.

Huh? Nothing wrong with facebook account that leads into websites recognizing you personally and popping up targeted ads? Not to mention the websites will advertise 'eagl also visited this laungerie site' :D

I got no pop ups...you may need to check your settings on your blocker. Facebook IS evil, but it has some value.

I haven't found any value outside of teenagers scoring sexual partners from there. And since I'm no longer a teenager I see zero value and a lot of downsides on it.

It has been almost a year since I deactivated my account.  The only thing that it (facebook) did for me was allow me to get in touch with some old friends/soldiers that I have not spoken to in years and by reading most folks' posts, re-affirm my feeling of a need to weep for the future...
