Early 1960s Pearl River area, Hancock county, MS.
A man who was african American was driving down a county road at night, bordering the honey island swamp area. He struck something with his 1950s era Chevy, while it was crossing the road. His car was incapacitated and he waved the next motorist down and asked them to call the police, stating he thinks he hit a person. Police arrived found significant front end damage to the mans car as well as blood and hair on the front end. The man insisted it was a person walking upright that he hit with his car yet he couldn't find him after the fact. The police located a blood trail leading into the swamp and followed it trying to locate the injured victim. They called out several times and followed the trail. Every time they would get close they could hear something large moving away from them. They followed it for about a mile before giving up and returning to the road.
I saw this a long time ago on TV and actual knew a few Hancock Sheriff officers at the time. I was curious and asked a few about it and one of them was the grandson of the officer that took the initial report. His account was of something large, hairy, walking upright and bad enough to dent a 60mph Chevy's front end and still walk away into the swamp.
