Why go to a historical setup and fly in a totally unhistorical manner?

Well I consider myself a part of the airborne recon, and luckily they have armed my plane and asked that I get pictures of any damaged enemy aircraft I see or happen to find, while testing ammunition effectiveness.

(loner in the MA too...)

Me and Hazed had a pretty good session winging together last night. Well we arrived over target at the same time but worked fairly well together but I was wounded so it was somewhat difficult to fight.

Anyways, I think you'd be more prone to WANT to wing with people you are more familiar with. And sometimes I see people in there who I have no idea who they are.

S!

I tend to start alone because I`m not in a Squad.  But as soon as I can, I join up with someone else.  I would like to fly using R.W. but most of the Squad`s seem to be using their own channels and most non-affiliated pilots don`t seem to have it.

If I am alone I make sure I`m flying a fast aircraft.

Besides being historically a wrong tactic, I think people who are smart will realize the advantages of flying in teams just like they do in the MA.  The others will die faster or more often.

Well when i arrive in CT which has not been much lately i wanna lift off and go find a target.
If that means i have to go without a wingy then so be it i am not afraid   :)
What it comes down to is i am an impatient bastige who is not prepared to wait until somebody joins or is shot down so that i can cling to his coat tails.
Aaah the life of the lone hunter, harder to spot, no need to worry about having to pull some idjuts bellybutton outa the fire because he was too dumb to avoid that obvious mistake.
If it makes you feel happier think of me as an armed recon, luckily tho my plane will not be painted pink   :)
Before you label me an MA dweeb   :) I will say i dont have to get a kill a sortie to feel an accomplishment a succesful RTB is just as rewarding with or without a kill.

I guess I just find it odd.  I see all these discussions of how this or that should be more historical, but guys are flying by themselves in the arena.  Why get all the realistic physics, maps, planesets, etc. and then play like it's an every-man-for-himself deathmatch fragfest?

It's fine by me I guess.    :)
The escorts on my missions have been shredding the Luftwaffe and will probably continue to do so as long as the enemy insists on coming one at a time.  A lone wolf against an organized and proficient escort has a snowball's chance in hell.

But if anybody is serious about putting on an effective and at least quasi-historical show, they should read up on the historical rotte/schwarm/staffel tactics and come thump us some time.    :)

Yeah u are correct Funked of course..

I am more interested in the historical matchup of the aircraft than the squad/tactics.

I can't even bring myself to get into a squad, let alone stay in one, due to differences of opinion +)
Its nothin against the other guys, I just wish to do things how i want, when i want, where i want +)  Yeah it hasn't got me very far in this world yet I gotta admit, but hey its a goal of freedom! +)

Numbers are in a bit for it too I think Funked, I usualy fly with a wingie personaly (I s*ck baaaaaaaaad when I am alone), but sometimes you log in the CT & have only 4/5 poeple in & most of them are already fighting or across the channel.

I don't complain, makes for a good 2 on one when ya meet the lone wolves. makes em easier to kill  :D

I was kind of hoping to see squadrons of planes fighting each other in the CT.I was hoping to try and mimic the formations and tactics that the allies and axis employed.
I also had the strange missconception that w would be bombing just like they did.flying man bombers over a tartget and carpet bombing with full salvos.why i thought this i just dont know.

Would it be possible to make the entire factory areas the target? so that as long as the bomb falls inside the square you get a hit?

Just had an idea..see seperate post

I get into the CT and not many people there.  So I fly, mainly alone.  I try to get with Hazed and ProfFate and cause the Tommy grief (which we did yesterday).

I like the CT, sometimes you have to fly longer to find a fight, but it is much more realistic and the opponents you meet there are top notch.  Plus the SA required there can be considered "pucker factor".   :) MY neck gets sore from looking around.  I've been jumped more than once, (MarkAT, ya bastiage  :)).

Are there dedicated squad nights in the CT?

But the topic of Funked's post, lone wolves will get eaten up in the CT.
Rock:  Ya see that Ensign, lighting the cigarette?
Powell: Yes Rock.
Rock: Well that's where I got it, he's my son.
Powell: Really Rock, well I'd like to meet him.
Rock:  No ya wouldn't.

Well, I tend to fly lonewolf because that is kinda just my personality in RL.
The #'s in the arena have a lot to do with it too.
Logged in this morning, 7 people in the arena.  4 Allies, 3 Axis.
Because I tend to go for alt and try to have an advantage if and when the enemy decides to come out and fight, I usually end up by myself.  Where others head straight for the fight, I fly to live in CT......I wanna rtb every sortie that I can.
The only issue I really have right now is the lack of action.
I pretty much made an bellybutton of myself in there a few minutes ago, and to those who caught the flak from me, I do apologize.
The appeal of the CT to me was the matchup of the planes.  None of the MA's Allied vs Allied or Axis vs Axis confrontations, pure WW2 combat, with Spits and Jugs and the such mixing it up with 109's and 190's.  The fuel multiplier enables you to remain in the "combat zone" for a longer period of time, and I really thought that would help all the planes.
What I am seeing more and more lately is both sides (I guess both sides are doing this) keeping to themselves, and little action occurring.
Today I flew from A40 in a P-47D-11, with 100% fuel and a drop tank, headed S til I hit 15K, then I turned east.  Red bar over the Continent, maybe I will see some action.
I ended up flying all the way east to A21, then turned SW and flew all the way to A11, reversed and flew back up to 21, then headed west for rtb as my fuel situation mandated.
No cons sighted, no red bar, Allied pilots were up and talking but no one finding an action.
Was talking with Hazed on private, hoped someone on the LW side would come out for a fight.
Nope, nada......nothing.
Now, to the best of my recollection, the LW did not just sit on their hands and allow enemy planes to roam unopposed over the LW's territory.  Frustrated to the core, I pretty much WHINED like a baby on the guard channel about the lack of action.
While my presentation of my viewpoint was lacking in tact, I still believe it is valid.
Saying "it takes a long time to get to 30K" is not an excuse for not fighting.  I burned a whole main tank and all but 25% of my auxiliary  cruising over France.......more than enough time for some pilot to intercept me.
I am wondering now if this arena will survive......if newbies check into this arena first, what are they gonna see?  It is up to the pilots to make the arena work, and us older hands at this are gonna have to be the ones to lead the way.  Flying over an hour without seeing an enemy will not make a new AH pilot want to visit that arena again soon.
To all, I ask this:  When you log in, do something, do anything, but don't sit there and do nothing.  Right now, IMO, the arena is about as exciting as Flight Simulator 98.....  :(

The CT offers no goals that would "demand" more historical action.

The only goal so far is to grab a plane and furball with a "historic planeset handikap".

BUT, this is "historically correct" behaviour! Why? Because real WWII pilots would have done the same as we do if they would have had the freedom to "do what they want".

Galland used his rank to fly a highly inofficial two man sortie over England just for the fun of it...

So, right now the goal is to furball - this "forces" the following tactics (for me at least):

Flying Spitfire: What the heck - I can outturn any LW so I can fly lonewolf against 4 of 'em, np.

Flying Me109: I need alt for b&z - a wingman would be great too. I'll grab alt over France and find a wingie along the way... oh, bogie's in a P-47! now that's one plane I CAN outturn! forget the wingie, forget the alt, here we go...  :D

I woulden't mind more historic action, but without a reward (capture Bases in England/France - get operation seelion underway or launch D-Day), why do it?

On a side-note: I actually like the low-numbers deal... more quality fights, less whiners  :D

whatever,

Effdub

"The only goal so far is to grab a plane and furball with a "historic planeset handikap"."

Bullseye. Which, actually, I would not mind except I never see enough online in there to even call what's happening "a furball."

I logged on for about 10 seconds last Friday night at 6:30-pm est and saw 40 folks on. I rubber my hands togther in anticipation for a goo time when I could log on later and fly. I logged back on at 9:30pmest and there were 8 people in there  :(
I flew LW to balance things out and I flew Lonewolf because I could only get a response from Hazed as far as to what was going on for the LW side. No idea what the other two were doing.
