We have no control over the Internet.  That said, no one can do anything without information.  Saying, "I disco'ed!  Fixit!" is pretty worthless and guarantees nothing will get done, due to the simple fact, no one knows what the real problem was.

Ping Plotter is a players best tool for determining what failed and where, if it is network related.

The U.S. has experienced the loss of millions of miles of telecommunications lines, due to the extreme winter weather over a very large area of the country.  This WILL impact the Internet.  Specifically, it is going to hit anything real time, such as the game, really hard.  Browsers do not care about packet loss, they cache, they retry and it can take longer for things to get done.  No big deal.

A real time game is more sensitive to these issues.  Now, on top of that is all the Internet usage which more than doubles due to the holidays.  The loads are such that it will cause more problems, in and of itself.

IF the problems are network related (calling your ISP and asking them to test your local connection will no you no good.  That does not encompass every router between you and any given server), you can run Ping Plotter (www.pingplotter.com free download at the bottom of the downloads page) to our servers and get a visual indication of what the path to the servers look likes.

NOTE:  The next to last hop will always show 100% packet loss.  This is normal.  It means that router does not honor the "ICMP ECHO" packet ping/traceroute/Ping Plotter uses.

There could be other reasons for discos, but given we know there are problems all over the Internet, especially in the East/Mid/South parts of the U.S., it is a likely place to start.

Also note, once an abnormal crash occurs, the likelihood of it happening again is higher, due to the possibility of Windows corrupting a game setting file, but that is easily tested by renaming the "settings" folder and see if the problem goes away.

Skuzzy sir just a couple of questions....since I have been dsico'ing like crazy over the last 4-5 days also and I cant even remember  last time I discoed before this started happening this week. The game for me has been rock solid since I started playing almost 2 years ago   :salute

1. whats the IP address to the server so the next time it happens I can try the ping plotter?

2. By renaming the "Settings" folder in the "Aces High"game folder, wont that mess the game up? I took a peak in the folder and there a ton of files in it and I want to make sure I dont mess things up by renaming it.

Thanks in advance and Happy new year.

By renaming it the game will generate a "default" settings folder. The game will run just like if you first installed it. All the settings you have saved... head positions, key and stick mapping and so on will all be default again. If the game plays ok with the default settings folder you can start bringing stuff over from the original settings folder you renamed. Do a bit at a time and then run the game for a bit. If it starts messing up again remove those files that you last put in as they may be the problem ones.

PSEG and other utility companies across the region were ordering extra crews in case of widespread outages. Officials said the scope of power failures would depend on how wet and heavy the snow was and whether it would weigh down electricity lines.

Sorry... Would you rather prefer the European bad weather news, possibly affecting Internet connections:
Quote from: http://www.weather.com/news/weather-winter/winter-storm-hits-uk-pre-christmas-20131224
A severe winter storm caused major travel problems in parts of western Europe Tuesday, stranding passengers travelling for Christmas at Paris and London airports and leaving hundreds of thousands of homes without power. --- Electricity provider ERDF said the winds left nearly 200,000 homes in western France without electricity.

SOrry for reviving an old tread but I was curious.. what is a "good" ping time to the server? I just checked mine and its an average of 23ms.

As FLS said, anything under 300 is fine for playing AH.

More generally speaking, a "good" ping time depends on many variables. A wired connection usually has a significantly shorter ping time than mobile connections like 3G or satellite. Another factor is the physical distance between the computer and the server. In theory every hundred miles add one millisecond to the ping time if the data travels the speed of light. In real world the best ping times will be about twice that long at their best. So if you live somewhere between 100 and 200 miles from the AH server, your ping is what it should be. Something like Oklahoma City, Texarcana, Shreveport, Houston, Austin, Abilene...
