Better Default Head Positions
« on: April 14, 2014, 04:48:25 PM »
This came up in another thread-The default head positions are rarely optimum. I think it would help noobs and help with noob retention if the default head positions that came with the game were more optimized. Thank you, that is all.

To me the initial head position should be historically accurate and not be adjustable.  You could still adjust all other views and have zoom.  I just think looking forward you should see what a WW2 pilot would see.

You do see looking forward what a pilot would see with the existing views.

Not always.  The Mossie VI, for example, has the pilot's view set low to look directly through the gunsight, whereas in reality sitting normally the pilot's view was above the gunsight.  He simply ducked down a bit to look through it.

There isn't one historically correct head position. Pilots were different sizes. Some seats were adjustable. Some pilots sat on more than their parachutes. We have the range of possible positions.

Better default views might help keep some new players. At least the 6 view.

That's my idea. Some people don't initially understand that they are adjustable or how to adjust them. Properly adjusted snap views in AHII work just as well as TrackIR IMO. Maybe at least a better HPS folder could be stickied somewhere?

A set made by Murdr is easy enough to find on the trainers page.

In WW 2 pilots are different sizes but in AH we have a generic pilot.  The historically correct head position is where the plane designer's figured the average head would be in the cockpit.  The P39 cockpit view is beyond me what they were thinking on that plane.

Seems like I read too, the F4U1 had a seat 7" lower than the F4U1A.

Having the default pilot forward view with the ability to save 2 adjustments for it would help. Have them on a button toggle. Set one for fighter mode and one for attack mode.

By accident I discovered the A20 has a more natural glide bomb aimpoint if the gunsight is down on top of the instrument deck. But bringing it back up to the default is necessary for air to air shooting. The B-25H is more natural for a 1000ft alt glide bomb run if the gunsight center is all the way at the top of the reflector plate while using a 5.5k aimpoint marker for the 75mm as the bomb marker release point for 400-600 away from the target.

Then with the FW190 F8 and Typhoon, rocket aiming is more accurate if the gunsight is raised up to elevate the rocket markers. But, I prefer to use those gunsights for air to air gunnery back at the default position.

I, placed a wish for this in the Wishlist forum already.

F4U pilot seat has a vertical adjustment of 9 inches in 1 inch increments.

The WW2 pilot likely had less trouble with his rear view then the newbie looking at his headrest.

I think what I read suggested the starting height was 7" higher.  This was done to help better qualify the F4U for carrier landing.  It went on to say there was need to see better over the long nose.

I'm not sure it is easy enough. Really, making reasonably well adjusted view the default is one of the simplest things we can do for new players, which we need more of.
