Heavy traffic causing some stuttering or slowdowns
« on: July 15, 2014, 03:28:42 PM »
Never had this problem before but recently when I get into heavy traffic my computer can't seem to handle it.

I've done scan disk and checked for background programs. It's all good. Any thoughts?

A DXDIAG output might give a clue.

I was thinking the same thing and may yet provide that. However, I may have resolved the issue. Last night it was horrible. I said enough and was about to put my old VC back on. Then I thought so often driver updates cause the issue. So I deleted the VC and all the associated programs. This morning it seems fine though I haven't been in heavy traffic. Still though what encounters I have had have been much smoother and no jerky actions.

So you think it might have been either your video card or its drivers? Out of the everlasting eagerness to learn something every day, is your video card of an older generation? I don't mean it were outdated, not at all, but each generation of cards launch new features and sometimes the latest drivers may ruin something in the bacwards compatibility section in order to enhance the novelty. Also, many of the low to mid class cards often are based to the previous generation although their model numbering is referring to the new one. So shortly: Does this match your case?

Probably not going to learn much from me. I'm not sure how old it is. It's a GeForce 660 TI. I would guess at least a couple years old.

A very good reason to post a copy of the first third of your Dxdiag.

Don't underestimate yourself! Learning that your card is a GF 660 Ti tells me a lot: The series was launched in late 2010 but it's still on the market which means the latest drivers should be totally valid. The DXdiag output would help more.

What I would post now wouldn't be the same since I deleted everything associated with the card. It seems to be working very well now. Still haven't gotten into real heavy traffic though.

Above is the Dxdiag. Any advice is welcome.

This is what I've done so far. I switched form nvidia to my old radeon card. Same results. I ran a virus scan and nothing. Just did download a AV. I checked for unwanted programs, nothing. I downloaded the hires textures and made sure I was at 1024.

My next step barring any new information is to reload windows. I really don't want to do that. However, I keep getting a message every now and then to run the windows repair. It finds nothing.

Right now it is just horrible. I'm also having joystick problems. I think the two are related. Then maybe it's sound. I'm getting static over my microphone. I just don't know.

Sounds like an IRQ conflict.

That would be rare these days.

I'm reinstalling windows now.

It's a couple of hours since your last post, so this may come late: How about repair install your Windows without losing any program or file? I know you can't do it the way it used to be able to in XP, but since Vista you've been able to do an "update" installation from within Windows. The prerequisite is that the version you're going to install has to be the same you're having on your machine. In plain English that means, that if your installation disk is Win7 which you have updated to SP1, you'd have to uninstall the service pack before "updating". And of course every update has to be redone.

Okay. After you reinstall Windows and the problem returns you might check the IRQ of your video card and hard drive controller. This 'rare' condition seems to be fairly frequent.
