Ya know, they have a food problem right?  They also have a population problem as well.  I think it's a self solving solution really... :noid

I used to work at a chinese restaurant.  The dinners for the staff were usually (for this white guy) an interesting adventure. I've had really. really wicked meals; sea bass, shark's fin soup, horse meat with chinese turnip, some stuff that I couldn't identify. but, man! It was tasty!

One thing that I could never stomach was called "bitter melon"
Picture in your mind a green pepper.  Now picture it with warts.  Now think about what that would taste like after being soaked for 5 days in battery acid.

Mantis prawns and spider crab?

I spent a 8 days in Beijing loved the food. Not sure what some of it was but I trusted my co- workers to order most of the time and they usually hit it out of the park....that is until one of them ordered for me a seafood dish that to this day I still taste when I burp ( either that or it's the taste of my stomach lining) it turned out it was sea slugs and stinky tofu. It was like eating raquet balls dipped in pre digested blue cheese . Wiped me out for a whole day.

I lived in Hong Kong for 7 months in 1996 prior to China taking control back from the British.  I worked for Magnum Films, the owner Danny Lee (Hard Boiled and the Killer with Chow Yun-Fat who has been in numerous Hollywood films) was a friend of my family and business, and I did stunt shooting and co ordinating as well as helped try and get a shooting program for the Boy Scouts going prior to China taking control, as Danny Lee was one of the Scout leaders of Hong Kong at the time.

Anyhow, they had tried to expose me to real "Chinese" food in Vancouver at a few non gui-lo restaurants there, as I was used to the whole American/Canadian Chinese food of ginger beef, sweet and sour pork, and shrimp fried rice.  Heh.  Most of the people in Hong Kong or Shanghai on the mainland where I did some work wouldn't have recognized any of that food as "Chinese" food whatsoever.  Well, the "real" Chinese food in Vancouver was bad enough - bean soup for dessert...wtf!? are you serious? - but once in HK and China, it was a whole new level of awful.

After that experience, I decided that dim-sum in North America is actually in insider joke with the Chinese, just to see what stupid crap like fried chicken feet and blood jello cubes that they can get us gui lo to in fact eat, as they laugh in the back watching on video cameras.  I'm certain of it.

I wish.  where I live the "weird" food is basically chicken hearts and gizzards, piggs feet or rabbit.  if I want anything else I must travel 40 or 50 miles to LA.
