Were you sure to install all the native motherboard, sound, and video card drivers?

Running DXDIAG will tell you if something is missing.

After you run it there is a button to save the information.  Save to your desktop..... it will save as a text file. Copy and paste the first  third of the report here, up to and including Sound Devices.

Based on a very quick overview and limited knowledge this caught my eye:
Quote
Current Mode: 1440 x 900 (32 bit) (75Hz)
          Monitor: Plug and Play Monitor
  Monitor Max Res: 1600,1200
Your monitor simply may not be able to handle 75Hz in games. Most modern lcd monitors run at 60Hz although there are exceptions. If I understand the rest correctly, you're also using a resolution other than the native one, making me suppose your monitor is of the 4/3 type instead of the widescreen you're using. You either have black blocks above and under the picture or your image is flattened sideways, making people and everything else look very slim. Try the 1600x1200 @ 60Hz in Windows' monitor settings.
Quote from: BaldEagl, applies to myself, too
I've got an older system by today's standards that still runs the game well by my standards.

Alright, then I misunderstood the MaxRes, although on my rig it shows the native resolution as max. This makes me curious, why I'm asking a couple of measurement questions: How high and wide is your screen inside the bezel? And if you divide the bigger number with the smaller, do you get 1.333 or 1.778?

Anyway, try with the highest resolution with 60Hz if it works.

I've got an older system by today's standards that still runs the game well by my standards.

You have just lost me there . Can not find  the size and the only option I have is the 75Hz .

EDIT: I know it's a 19 inch widescreen and that's about it .

Don't understand why every thing else run's fine . Video's and so on .

OK, no need to measure anything, 19" widescreen is the information I was looking for. BTW a ruler or tape measure would have done the trick, nothing more special than that. You should be able to lower the Hz value, though. Have you tried other drivers? Here's the link to the latest ones: http://us.download.nvidia.com/Windows/340.52/340.52-desktop-winxp-32bit-english.exe
