Oculus Rift DK2 working with AH
« on: September 12, 2014, 07:30:55 PM »
Just an update for those that don't watch the hardware forum.

I've got my Oculus Rift DK2 working with AH using the latest OpenTrack build and the new version of Vorpx.

3D performance is excellent, head tracking is beautifully smooth (full 6DoF), instruments are easily readable.

You can't buy Oculus Rift it's a developer sample. If you could, 300 bucks for a clear virtual display is peanuts.

Will knock something up in a week or so. I'm away from home this week.

Thanks but I'll wait for the consumer version. I prefer a ready product, not something you spend more time fixing up than playing with.

Awesome Vulcan....I bought one about a month ago but it still has not shipped. Hopefully soon. I may pick your brain when it comes.

It wasn't like that for me, took about 15-20 mins to figure out a good setup for AH.

That said, people reading this do need to remember to SDK is beta, and a lot of the supporting software is beta - so expect things to be a little "interesting". If you want a perfect not "bleeding edge of tech" experience then wait for the consumer rift and HTC to official support VR.

and that said the advantages of VR are enormous, natural head tracking means 'padlocking' your targets with the Mk1 eyeball is much much easier and Stereo 3D means you have very good 3D depth which allows you to judge distance, altitude, and energy far far better. So is a VR headset an advantage in game? Yes I think so.

Current estimate from OR is that they expect to ship the consumer version next summer with higher resolution at a cost of $200-$400 dollars.
