At the turn of the last century Argentina was one of the wealthiest countries on the earth. This is 1900s. From there they devolved into a nanny state with horribly align fiscal and monetary policies. Many economic historians teach the folly of Argentina that has turned it into a basket case internationally. Just recently a Federal Court grant the motion of US plantiffs against Argentinian assets relative to their latest default. Argentina now defaults almost as much as my cousin Leroy, and for about the same amount of money. Usually $5-$10. In fact, the whole Falklands War was nothing more than a distraction from another round of defaults. General Mickey Mouse wanted to focus the nations attention on the Malvinas and not the horrible economic state of his latest reforms.

Apparently, redistribution of wealth, even the kind that takes place over time via inflation, doesn't work. America is in the process of learning the lessons of Argentian, mostly because we've refused to learn from them. Ah...the fate of empires.

During the Falklands war Zack was found by reporters marching up and down his street wearing a kilt and playing the bagpipes in a truly patriotic fervor. His support was duly noted by certain royals who then invited him for tea. :old:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/top-gear/11137879/Jeremy-Clarkson-stoned-as-Top-Gear-crew-abandon-cars-and-flee-Argentina.html

Well it's a bit of an over reaction if you ask me, however, I'm afraid I just don't believe that no-one noticed H982 FKL during pre-production and that it was a coincidence.  But the reaction of Argentina....I mean, good grief Penfold.

"Local councillor Juan Manuel Romano said the digits 269 on the number plate of the Ford Mustang Mustang Richard Hammond was driving were close to the 255 Britons killed during the 1982 war.
He added that the numbers 646 on James May's Lotus could be taken as a reference to the 649 Argentinian casualties."

Bit of a stretch if you ask me.  What is it with other countries and patriotism?  I mean, we're a patriotic country, just the other day I was chatting up a Spanish bird and couldn't not say "If you want Gibralta back, come and take it." - I didn't pull btw - but when we have the mickey taken out of our fallen empire, we laugh along with the rest of you.  How come other countries take it all so personally?

The numberplate is an excuse to slash Clarksons tyres every night he's in the country, not gather a mob of 2,000 war veterans (hmmm, 20 year old(ish) Falklands veterens eh?) to stone the film crew.  Clarkson has tweeted he's convinced the mob was state organised.

Wrong.

I also must have read the same article as swoop.  I believe that the powers that be in Argentina are attacking the show to build political capitol.
If I had a gun with 3 bullets and I was locked in a room with Bin Laden, Hitler, Saddam and Zipp...  I would shoot Zipp 3 times.

Clarkson has tweeted:  For the only accurate account of what happened in Argentina, read the Sunday Times today.

I'm trying to muster up the enthusiasm to go buy a copy but it's Sunday and I wasn't planning on getting up...

As Boo notes, it was not always so. The default goes back to '03 or so. Witness the wonders of socialism; promoting the power of the state even as it impoverishes and enfeebled it.

As for Christine, despite the media adulation, she is much hated now. I note that my own company has reasons ( I will say no more) to take A dim view and that my friends in Brazil laugh pretty loudly at the two exchange rates ( the real or black market rate and the official rate promoted by the Kirchner witch to artificially support her failing currency) and consider the current government there to be of numbered days.

But there is a contingent that loves enabling dysfunction that seems to love her...

As for Jezza, Viva Clarkson -and may he punch the ace hat Piers Morgan again and again and again!!!

Laziness and ignorance is a universal trait, zack. The source of differentiation therefore must lie elsewhere.

Well, here, I owe a better explanation to Zack, who is both possibly keen or obtuse.

He is entirely correct to say the problem isn't specifically socialism. Indeed, the problem is a good deal more specific; the Argentine government spent far more money than it could hope to pay back and there were foreign financiers dumb enough to underwrite it. That said, I do not believe Argentina to be a land beset by any more than a fairly commonplace frequency of ignorance and laziness. The real problem for average Argentines, apart from a globally and frequently noted tendency to be obtrusive, overbearing, and annoying ( not crimes in and of themselves) is that they were dumb enough to elect a government that wracked up a hefty f'in fee. That government has defaulted on this debt, a kind of mixed blessing for the citizenry but a real disaster in some other ways ( eg, try that trick twice...).

Coming back around to the point of departure, yes, it is entirely possible for a government to overspend withou being specifically socialist... But, in Argentine under either Kirchner, there were both...

I really struggle to believe that Jeremy Clarkson, of all people, is some kind of misunderstood innocent who just happened to have a potentially inflammatory number plate on his car.
... missions were to be met by the commitment of alerted swarms of fighters, composed of Me 109's and Fw 190's, that were strategically based to protect industrial installations. The inferior capabilities of these fighters against the Mosquitoes made this a hopeless and uneconomical effort. 1.JD KTB

Where ever he was, he was in South America with a stupid license plate. What did he expect would happen?

You might think they had learned their lesson after the whole redneck incident, stupid is as stupid does I guess.

The whole thing is on a par with the idiots who broadcast spoof names for the KAL crash crew.
