Looking at a new monitor.
« on: December 18, 2014, 03:32:24 PM »
I'm looking for a new monitor that won't break the bank. It will be for gaming primarily.  Anyone have any suggestions or know a good place online to do some shopping?

This is the one I currently have right now and I love the difference. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=7674735&Sku= I had triple 24's but opted for larger. Can't say I am disappointed.

how much money you thinking.  breaking the bank is well very misleading.

edit:  in my opinion if you gonna go with a good monitor you may want to think higher than 1080p.  even if it means waiting a couple of months to save more money.

Sorry about the Lion's loss to Bremond.  It was a good game, though.

About the monitor...I would also specify refresh rates at 144hz.  Asus makes a 24" and a 27" that are only a little more expensive.

I have three of the 24's presently and they are easy on my old eyes.

I was going to post the same as the above post.  If you want a really good gaming monitor, a BenQ, Asus, and certain other select models in all the other builders, in 144hz, is a good way to go.  144hz instead of 60hz means you can see up to 144 frames per second instead of a max of 60.  Many will say that the "eye can't tell the difference" between anything over about 30, but trust me, anyone who compares a good 60hz to a 144hz side by side, or even within a short period of time of using either, will tell you that 144hz looks much better, particularly with games.  I know in AH, I would never, ever go back to 60hz again.

Gsync is ok, but IMO, honestly, it's really not worth the extra $, which is a lot, to get a Gsync monitor for Aces High - certain competitive FPS games, it can make a difference, and there IS a difference and improvement with it, but I would never advise anyone to get it unless they had excess $ or $ was no object.  A good 24 or 27" BenQ or Asus 144hz monitor (that gives you 4 to choose from right there) should be within 300 on the low end, and 400ish on the high.  The last Asus linked by 38Ruk, I've had 3 of them in the last couple years, as well as the 27" version, and only recently upgraded to a newer 27" 1440p 144hz monitor from them.  In truth, the 900$ I spent compared to the 279$ you can get the 24" Asus for - not really worth it, so you're better off with the 24" anyhow IMO.  Best $/buck performing monitors I've had, the VH248QE.

Currently using three Acer's.    Considering moving to one of these:   http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=8525799&CatId=5469  or 144mhz.    Just not sure.

I just found a really good article about overclocking the same series of monitor to get the refresh rate up to 85hz ....which would be a ton smoother than the 60hz Asus has them capped at .  looking at posts from peeps with the PB298...they are getting 75hz pretty consistantly some as high as 85. A fast IPS panel would be the best of both worlds .... as TN's do sacrifice a bit of image quality for their 120-144hz speed.

The prices will be coming down, too. You will be seeing more and more 240Hz, then 480Hz, and even 960Hz.

I don't know how good an idea it is to 'overclock' a display. Most displays I've seen will lose image quality if pushed beyond their specs and the degradation may appear only after a weeks use. I'd say that you're better off getting a 'real' 120 or 144hz screen.

LG34UM95, 34 inch Ultra Wide, best monitor made for Aces High. Like having 2 monitors side by side without the bezel in the middle.

Many ultra wide monitors suffer from a high input lag. With AH that's not going to be a problem but if you play first person shooters also it's definately something to look out for. I recommend to check reviews and look for input lag measurements when shopping for a monitor.

the one he listed is rated at 5ms. That's pretty darn good in my book.

I wish you had to come to Michigan for something, then I could make you a deal on your monitors...   :)
