Yes, straws, toothpicks, cloves ( dry kind in the spice aisle ).  Cold water helps too.    I kept a bottle slushy in the freezer at work.    8 years here.   Too many dead friends, you know?

Good luck kilz. I've never smoked, but I watched my Dad struggle with it for many years.

Do NOT beat yourself up if it gets the better of you, nor should you accept it.

Alike Scherf I've never smoked, but my father has. Starting at the age of 8 to not feel so hungry at the end of the war through his entire career during the time when smoking was allowed and common even in the smallest office rooms filled with easily flammable papers. He quit cold turkey at his mother's funeral in 1997 and hasn't smoked ever since. No tricks, substitutes, nothing. Just a decision, knowing some day's may be harder than others. My wife did the same way over a decade ago. Both having the attitude that 150-200 pounds of human flesh must be stronger than one gram of dried leaves in a paper tube.

Nicotine gums and patches are merely air refresheners and will keep you hooked, sometimes even adding the dose. A friend tried the gum until once getting shakes and shivers and other poisoning symptoms from the stronger gums he had bought because the shop had run out of the milder ones.

There you go.  Smartest move of your life.

Don't fall for the minds Jedi trick, "If I just smoke one more, I will feel better and not need another smoke."  It just resets the clock and makes it harder.

Win those wars one at the time.

Start a walking program.  It can be as simple as parking a little further away.  If you go to a store, circle the store first.  Walk as fast as practical.

GOOD luck and hang with it and if you feel you just got to smoke don't go back . Get a vapor cig to get your nic . I can not even be in the room with some one smoking a regular cig now smell's so bad and I smoke for 30 year's pack a day or better .

Keep a baggie with a few wet cigarette butts in your pocket. Open the bag and smell them whenever you want to smoke. You won't want one.

When I read 'keep a baggie' I was expecting to see something else than wet cigarettes lol. I was wondering how's that going to help :)

1. Every time you want a cigarette brush your teeth instead.

2. You must exercise to release the frustration and anger that would or can accumulate during a normal week that "when smoking would not be stressful". Endorphins are the natural drug your body releases during and after events such as sex or workingout.

3. Weight gain will happen if diet is not looked after.

And last... watch a video about lung and throat cancer anytime you feel like you are having a "Weak moment"     a picture is worth a thousand words.

You will achieve your goal... If you are stubborn enough to see it through.  :salute

quit smoking cold turkey 3 yrs ago.. after 20+ yrs smoking.. no gum, no drugs, no e cig. nothing. cold turkey.

i found it suprisingly easy. I probably would have done it earlier if i hadn't heard my whole life how difficult it supposedly is.

i agree with what someone said early in the thread. i just had to decide to do it..  it occured to me i go 8 hours every night without smoking. i've gone 12 hours in airplanes and airports without it. and i lived... so decided around xmas of 2011 i would do it when my supply ran out (used to buy 8 cartons a month at the end).. i smoked my last cig, and that was that.

the cravings go away.. the stupid ritual changes.. (i remember the oddity of realizing how much a habit it had became.. certain places i'd always light up, every day on the way to work, etc. etc... now i can't even remember those.)

the biggest thing I noticed was the real heavy craving only lasted about as long as it took to smoke a cigarette, so once you're thru the 5 minutes, you just carry on and it's no biggie.

I don't think the cravings ever go away . My father smoked most of his live and a few year's right before he died we were deer hunting and he told me he was setting there , now he had quit like 10 year's ago at this time and said I was setting there and I felt like I was craving something and he could not figure out what it's was until he said he reached in top front pocket to get a cig and at this time it hit him he was craving a cig after all those year's .

Keep in mind this is an addiction to a drug.  E smoke is just another way to stay addicted to nicotine.

Smoking is often labeled a habit so don't full yourself.  It is a drug addiction.

Yes the craving go away. One should be careful though.   You are always only one puff away from turning stupid.

One neat thing happens when you quite and it is a defining moment.  You start to smell people that smoke and it starts to stink.

I know I am still getting my nicotine but I am cutting down the nicotine every month in the juice until I get to zero then I be done . That's the plan anyway . I know what you mean about addiction way to well so it be hard to tell me any thing about it .
I was addicted to the bottle for a long time as other thing's but I do not crave to drink now (quit in 1999) but it took me like five year's before I got like that . Just trip's me out that father had the cravings for a cig after all those year's of quitting that time .

Do not get drunk with smoke enablers, if you do get drunk be with a positive influence that loves you.

If you get around smokers and want one, say no to yourself and walk away, preferably going to the gym or some other type of work.

I quit smoking as a side effect of me taking wellbutrin to help with a car accident I had about 7 years ago.  I took wellbutrin for about a month but within 1 week of taking it I stopped smoking without even realizing it.  about 5 days into it, somebody asked me for a cigarrete then I realized I had none.  first time in 20 years.

others in my company have taking wellbutrin and successfully quit as our company went smoke free last year.
