The 262 and 20mm question
« on: January 06, 2015, 09:05:28 AM »
Just out of curiosity... Cuz I can't find to much..
Would the 262 have been more effective with 4 20mm's and how much more ammo could she have in the nose?
And how many 20mm rounds does it take to equal that of the 30mm round?

Against maneuvering fighters?  Probably.  Against bombers?  No.

When the Germans were testing the MK 108 cannon, they found it took an average of 4 rounds to take out a B-17 bomber compared to the average 25 rounds of 20mm to take out a B-17.

The 20mm number was actually 20 hits to be certain of a shoot-down, though the guys who did the report said many had been brought down with fewer.

I have the report if anyone wants it (it's in German, but the tables are fairly comprehensible), anyone who wants it PM me.
... missions were to be met by the commitment of alerted swarms of fighters, composed of Me 109's and Fw 190's, that were strategically based to protect industrial installations. The inferior capabilities of these fighters against the Mosquitoes made this a hopeless and uneconomical effort. 1.JD KTB
