$300,000 real world lost in mega Eve Online battle
« on: January 09, 2015, 10:17:56 AM »
I searched to see if anyone had talked about this here, but didn't see any threads related to this battle:

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.840892-EVE-Online-Mega-Battle-Breaks-300-000-In-Real-World-Losses

I mean, holy crap.   I don't play Eve, I've never tried it, but I've seen some references to it here and have been checking out videos for it lately.   This is my favorite, and sure makes the game look like a lot of fun.  The guy screaming at the end really puts a smile on my face - it's like he's at a football game or something:

This is Eve Online

Really makes me miss gaming.   But seriously.  300K equivalent real world dollar in losses?   Thats gotta be an exaggeration, but even so, don't we assume here that any potential real world loss would make players just run from combat in AH?   Are Eve players that much bolder, or just crazier?

I hope the guys the are participating in the Scenario in January keep your film running, and some very talented film-maker can do the same type of video for AH.

I don't see it as $300k, maybe the market labels it worth that much but it isn't worth q cup of coffee to me.

I don't believe in investing real money in ANY game, beyond what it takes ot play it, unless you own a professional sports team.

From a certain point of view, their real money investment likely IS "what it takes to play it".  I don't get Eve at all, but there sure seem to be a lot of people who love it.  I agree with you though, I'd never pay money for something in a video game that I could lose.  That just seems really odd to me.

Thanks Frenchy, that's a fascinating account of the battle.

Seriously, I feel some kind of awe at an online conflagration of that scope.  The command, control and communication displayed by the factions involved is amazing, and the strategies and tactics employed too.

I have been playing for about a week in the tutorial missions. I feel very lucky just finding my way back to base after some basic mining to scanning missions.

in previous news it was reported that a spy had actually guided them into an ambush that was pre planned.  the spy reportedly has been working at it for months and received death threats after it happened.

there was a thread here a few months ago.

Eve is really an incredible game, however, it's one of those games you either love or dislike. I've played it on and off over the years but I've never been able to get into to it. What always blows my mind is the sheer scope of the game, you can fly for 24 hours real life time over hundreds of star systems and that's only tiny, tiny, tiny fraction of the games space. It's just a great game, I just wish it would hold my interest.
