any body found a solution to fix windows update after using the norton tool ? it disables the background intelligent services under Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Administrative Tools/ services which runs the windows updater leaving you with an error code

You can try System Restore, but it will bring the Norton back. Even worse, you might get a crippled Norton back, leaving you in a worse situation you started with...

Your system is Windows 7 64 bit, right? Try the System Update Readiness Tool: http://www.microsoft.com/en-US/download/details.aspx?id=20858. That often does the trick.

The un-installer, which ships with Norton, does not really remove Norton.

For a pc with windows 7 pro, this might work:

  Control Panel> System and Security> Action Center> Troubleshoot common computer problems>

  System and Security> Fix problems with Windows Update>

  Then a window comes up> Click Advanced and tick Apply repairs automatically

  Click Next

Hopefully you've already run a full virus scan.

yup  thats what started the problem

this was not my computer that is having the problem . i am helping on another windows 7 home premium system. the issue started when they used the norton tool i gave them from skuzzy's link on a different post. http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,371370.0.html.
  maybe this is the first anybody has noticed this or had this issue . i have been to microsoft help forum left the question as i have done here . i have read some others have had this issue as well. i have been lucky with this issue so far in that i was able to use a restore point and bring back the system with a disabled norton and added microsoft security . as of now the system has regained updates but sooner or later norton has to go . this is the main reason i never will use norton security. all the issues it can cause can be a bigger pain then finding and removing a virus.

I've very seldom ran in to problems with the Norton Removal Tool during the 15-20 years of using it. IIRC the biggest problems have been that it hasn't done its work properly, making me scrape everything Norton and Symantec manually from the Explorer and Registry. After updating Windows you might want to give it another try. Create a restore point before that, though, just in case it might cause trouble again.

I was going to say, I had not ever heard of anyone having an issue with that removal tool.

I do not understand why software companies do not clean up after themselves, when the software is removed from a computer.  There is no excuse for it.

Does this computer have the windows update built in troubleshooter? I always try it first. It has worked fine for me.

yes it had me so frustrated i was ready to send a strongly worded response to norton. its a big enough pain just trying to find and delete the leftover folders they leave you.

yes tried that approach as well . mr fixit forgot his tools lol . the problem is you cannot restart this. it will say stopped and will send you an error code which i sent to microsoft.

I have grown to dislike Norton for this very reason. Only computer we have Norton on is wife's work computer because they require it for her to do tele-work.

Other companies, like Intuit, are just as bad.  Intuit will leave over 4MB of registry entries, which can take hours and hours to remove by hand.
