I've been using TrackIR since the old version 3 (which required a software add-on to get motion along the X, Y, and Z axes). Took me all of fifteen minutes to decide that it was a must-have addition to flight simming. Some have reported dizziness or disorientation using TrackIR but I guess I'm just lucky, because I've never had those issues.

Putting the "pause" and "center" keystrokes on buttons on your HOTAS is a good idea. I use both of mine a lot, especially when firing guns.

Although it's kinda fragile, I prefer to use the "TrackClipPro" with the LEDs rather than the "TrackClip" with the reflectors. It seems less prone to being distracted by random lights in the room. While using the reflector version clip with my old TrackIR 3 it would sometimes just lose its mind and leave me staring straight up in the cockpit. Quick-set epoxy has solved the only issues I've ever had with the LED version clip. YMMV.

Under the "motion control" basic settings I use speed = 1 and smooth = 10. And again, YMMV.

I kinda collect profiles. I have 14 of players in the game that I have setup so that once you unzip this file to the "profiles" folder in the TrackIR folder and you open the program the players names are the names listed on the profiles. They are actually pretty close to one another.

http://www.mediafire.com/download/xehkt23l458wq87/TrackIR_profiles_7_18_15.zip

The biggest issues with TrackIR are over shooting the view, and aiming for a shot.

Overshooting the views is when you flick a button your 'ON" that view you expect. With TIR you have to learn how far to move your head during your scans. This where that "swooping" feeling comes in as you scan around your plane for SA. Tracking is easy as this is what the program is made for. Through away SA and it is easy as pie to track and follow a single con anywhere.  :devil

Shooting is another issue. You shots depend on "site pictures". Being able to move your head all around in the cockpit means you aren't going to return to the same centered up view and so your "pictures" may be off just enough to make you want to shoot your self    :D

Two solutions. Have a "center" key programmed to your stick. This way you can get back to that starting point easily. All tho it isn't always easy to "center up" while in a fight. Second, add a bigger dead spot in the center of each axis in your profile. This will give you a bigger spot for your head to land at and so you don't have to keep re-centering with the key. If your dead spot is bigger you don't have to be sitting and looking precisely for the same spot in your chair, you can have a "close enough" spot that will center you to the same spot every time.

Last thing, you can mess with these profiles setting for days. Best advise is to try out a few and pick the one that feels good to you, and then stick with it for a month. Teach your head the movements needed to get around the screen. After a month or so THEN tweak it if you think you need to. If you keep messing with the setting it will take FOREVER to get use to it and to get comfortable with it.

Regarding the TrackClip fragility, their new ones are far, far better made.  I've had to repair the "old" style many times, and completely replace it once, the slightest bump and parts snap.

The new ones they have now I'd have to actually try to break intentionally, they are that much stronger.

I always recommenced disabling the Roll, the X Y and Z axis right out of the box.  get your head turn  right then add back the X first, then Y then z and last the Roll.  A good number of players leave the Roll off.

Doing it this way will help eliminate odd feeling you get when first starting Trackir.

Once your mind accepts that your head turns right and your eyes turn left to look at the screen, you will swear you are looking over the right wing..

If I asked a Trackir question, is that consider hijacking a thread?

Is there much difference between versions 4 and 5? I want one bad though I don't play enough to justify buying the more expensive 5.

Of the members in my squad, almost all of us have Track IR. The majority have the 4 and 2 of us have the 5, I think. There is not that big of a difference from what I have heard other than the receiver that sits on/near your monitor.I do that the 5 has a wider field of view.

here is the differences between the 4 and the 5.

Well, I tried TrackIR for a day and ended up sending it back to Amazon. It was too hard to use and found my hat switch just as useful. It would be great for a video capture, but I did not find it good at all for playing the game.

You gave up on it too soon. It definitely takes some un-learning of how you always looked around. Although you can still use the hat.

It takes some tweaking  of a profile. Then a period of  relearning how you look around. I like it but I'm constantly re-tweaking my profile.

yup, you gave up too soon. A good couple weeks of flying before you should think of sending it back. Too bad.

My wife bought me a TrackIR for my birthday (marry well, young Jedi), and I've been using it this weekend.  Fugi's collection of profiles has been hugely helpful, showing, as it does, the various ways the profile can be tweaked and giving you a chance to see what works best for you (Editor's Note:  Sik1 must have no nerves in his neck muscles].  Also useful was this youtube video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PPsUCNYTnc

Once I got the system set up it became apparent that it will take some time to get used to.  I've been using the offline mode for this purpose, doing rolls around the drones, that sort of thing.  But I can already see its value.

Thanks for all the good tips in this thread.

Some people move their heads forward to get away from the virtual headrest and some move back. Whichever you prefer, if you accelerate this movement away from the headrest, it's easier to check your 6, especially in the F4U and F6F.

Your recenter button should be a primary button that you can use without thinking about it.
