Tank Basics
« on: August 11, 2015, 03:43:55 PM »
Anyone know if there's a good write up on basic AH tank strategy and tactics?  Things like spotting, maneuvering, which tanks to use, etc?

Muzzy,

Try to get a hold of WWhiskey.  I'm sure he would be willing to help you with whatever you need.  I'm a mediocre tanker at best.

I'll let you know. My time is somewhat at a premium these days. Any quick advice you could give?

I'd go with a ball point. Less smudging.

Ball point might be a little hard on the monitor.

Oh...so that's what it's for. My wife won't let me mark up the screen. She did take over for me and white flagged a town with a tank. Maybe I should just let her handle it.

Quick tips that have served me well:

1. Use the terrain and obstacles to your advantage for concealment on the move. The best route is rarely a straight line.  And the name of the game when going after a superior tank is maneuver.
2. Fire and maneuver when at all possible.  Best set up is staying turret down then rocking up to hull down, take the shot, then maneuver back to turret down.
3. If you're getting attacked from a Stuka, IL-2, 9T, Hurri IID, or a plane with rockets, try maneuver to get under them.  You stand a slightly better chance of surviving a few runs, and the attacker using up his ammo without a kill shot.
4. A GV isn't a block target.  There are softer spots on each vehicle that you need to aim for.
5. Use your glacis plate to its maximum advantage when at all possible.  Angling your hull a little bit while keeping your side concealed will present your foe with thicker metal to penetrate than if the glacis plate is head on.
6. Practice leading your target while on the move.  Shoot at trees or berms on your way back to the concrete.

Last night I was in a tank and the last thing I saw was the shell th as it killed me. I'd say my biggest issue is spotting targets.  Switching to the gun view helps, but of course I get bounced by the one I can't see from the gunsight.

Search for a thread by Skydive.  He had a good write up on basic tanking.
