Question for you police officers.

I just came across this article about a device that turns a handgun into a non-lethal weapon by using a hollow alloy ball to catch a bullet to slow it down and spread the impact on impact with the target. I'm interested to hear your opinions on it.

I'm not, but I've been around firearms most of my life and had to carry one as part of my job some years back.

Simply put, this "accessory" goes against the principles found in most weapons training and creates a huge liability for both the officer and the person being shot at.

thats wat a taser is for, bean bag guns, mace and i could see that alloy round doing alot of damage that could potentially end up in more lawsuits vs a taser bean bag gun

Bad idea all the way around. If you need the weapon for it's intended purpose (ie saving your life or that of another by taking out the bad guy) it makes it far more difficult since the device will make it take longer to apply proper lethal force. If it is indeed a non lethal force situation a proper less lethal tool should be employed.

Either tazer, pepper spray or impact device in a non lethal encounter. Keep in mind that even though you may have decided to try non lethal first, the other guy gets a vote in it's application. Tazers, no matter what hype you hear, are NOT 100% effective, nor is pepper spray. Both can be negated by the environmental situation as well as the condition of the individual you are attempting to use it on. Once you are in grappling range you are now in a  possibly lethal encounter since your weapon is now in reach of the bad guy. Security holsters are also not 100% effective.

Thing is handguns are not very efficient weapons in the first place, the only reason to have this silly thing is to help prevent riots after Police shoot people that deserve to be shot. So by forcing officers to waste their first shot with this contraption they may not get another one "who cares right"?. Come Jan. come and see the latest Ghetto clothing styles, one guy may have 3 leather jackets on with four hoodies underneath "he's cold" and it can make it hard enough for a real bullet to get thru let alone this thingamajig.

I once saw 3 tazers empties into a guy and we still couldnt cuff him. Saw on a few occasions pepper fail. So if Police are told to use this thing in a situation where deadly force isnt authorized it sounds pretty silly to have a loaded handgun still pointed at the bad guy, with your finger still on a trigger, after launching the bowling ball at him. What if he doesnt go down? Now the PO might be under lots of stress with his/her finger on a stryker fire in a situation that doesnt require deadly force in the first place.

Bad idea in non-deadly force situation. Bad idea in deadly force situation "why intentional try to disable someone who is trying to blow your head off"? Bad idea all around.

Which makes me think it has a good shot at being adopted.

I rarely carry a fire arm the only times are man hunts and trans ports (sofar...) I dont like the Idea of it at all and I agree on the liability tid bit. Theres enough non-lethal options avaliable OC, CS, Bean bags, Batons, Tasers, dowel rods (fired from a 40mm or 37mm launcher), electric entry shields ect...

Further more, If you have time to set this rig up then this is already a pre planned use of force. Why have a single shot when you can use 7 less than lethal rounds in a 12ga? or 6 canisters of CS or OC? You train how you fight and fight how you train correct? So if you train in using your primary leathal asset in this manner whats gonna happen when you reach for this less than lethal device by accident?
