Any of y'all tan a deer hide before?
« on: January 17, 2016, 08:38:28 PM »
So we get a call last night from wife's friend saying she hit a deer. I go pick it up bring it home and all dressed and hung up. Was a big doe I'd say around 150ish with a beautiful coat. I have always said I wanted to try doing a hide so I figured what the heck I'll try with this one. I took my time skinning it out only wound up with 3 small holes. I am leaving to head out west for work on Tuesday so I can't finish right now and have read a ton of stuff, so I fleshed it out and salted it, my question is is do I roll hide up flesh side in (trying hair on)  after salting and put it in a bag until I get home, or do I stretch if out and let it dry??  I have read both ways and not sure which to do as I'll be gone about a month. I'm going to try the alum borax method I think.

My old roommate used to trap fox and coon he used to stretch them. I am not sure of all he did , but I know he stretched them and let them dry at one point. I remember him making his mother a red fox coat from the fox he caught. He did everything from catching them, everything inbetween and to the point cutting the finished pelts and sewing them up and then putting a liner in it. Then he had a special tag made up for the inside.
I also rememeber he wrote a book on trapping and I think tanning, never sold many of them.

If you won't finish till later then salt, roll hair out and store in freezer.

Lots of info on Google. Here is link to Arkansas game PDF. http://www.agfc.com/resources/publications/tandeerhide_bro.pdf

Dad tanned my hide a few times while I was growing up...don't remember any chemicals involved (though Dad did have a beer later that day). :old:

I use Borax to tan the tails...cut it, de flesh it and put the borax on it. Just watch it with an entire hide....the amt of ticks on a deer will make you want to loose your lunch. I stored a hide in a bag overnight (this year, sons Buck) that I was going to tan, until I saw dozens if not a hundred ticks falling off the hide when I opened up the next day. Needless to say those ticks carry some fairly lousy diseases....hide wound up in the trash. Next time it goes to the tanner.

My hunting buddy told this to my wife, since she is the squaw in the house it's her job to chew the hide till soft......she promptly smacked him on the back of the head, and called him some words the filter here won't let me post.   I told him she's no squaw, she's Irish/Italian......but if he keeps it up there's a good chance she's gonna go Apache on his prettythang
