We'll let this planeset run awhile:

(Warning: It's full forrest with a cloud file running so it's hard on your video cards.)

The terrain is a wonderful sight.  It ran very smooth for me .... at least until NatCigg came along in his Yak and  :joystick: and we had the time of our lives!   :airplane:  P40C versus Yak, Easyscor made a gem to test.  :cheers:

As I wrote in my latest report, the trees and forests look nice but the tree species may not be typical for that area. The area I tested is a little more south than where I live, but based on my road trips through Estonia it still looked a little odd. Birch and spruce should dominate, pine on the drier highland, alder is dominating near water and swamps.

Thanks! I'll keep that in mind when I rebuild it. Keep in mind I may need to create a new terrset to achieve such a division of tree species. As it is, I have at least two custom cities to build, if I can get the time for the custom objects. Time is against me here. atm, I'm rewriting my GIS routines to achieve better real world elevation files.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but when I compare Finland and Estonia in Google Maps, the tree density and species seem quite a bit different?

Oh, and remember, we as lowly terrain builders can't build trees!

No, and they don't eat stones either, but the folks that live on the other side of the Gulf of Finland, to the south, might make fun of you.  ;)

Speedtree has a handful of usable trees. Norway Spruce and Scots Pine look familiar on both sides of the Gulf of Finland, as well as European White Birch, River Birch and European Aspen. Western Sword Fern would add a nice touch as undergrowth of the broadleaves, growing dense in largish spots in shadowy valleys.

As for the tree density, this wartime example might offer you freedom to use your imagination: My neighbor who is War History Professor in the University, showed me a pair of wartime aerial photos covering our neighborhood. We compared them to a map dated 1942. What first puzzled us was that on the other picture there was a dense forest and the other was plain field. The map said forest, but according to post war photos it had been farmland for quite a long time. The professor finally came up to an explanation: The forest was chopped down during '42 or so to prevent Soviet partisans hiding on this side of the river. The photos were probably taken the same summer!

However, the southern side of the Gulf is more fertile, the Ice Age pushed all our soil down there. Also it's a little warmer there, so Maple and Linden get more common there and even an occasional beech. As a rule of thumb, let the firs dominate the north and broadleaves the south. Speaking about the Carelia map the differences are quite subtle, though, something like 70-30% at the max, maybe rather 60-40. Microclimates in different areas matter more, the surroundings of the Lake Ladoga look like they should be much more south.

Actually, pine bark saved many lives during the Famine of 1866–68 and even in 1918. Now they have revived it as Healthy Food!

I'm not sure which of us you're asking but these two JPGs will give you an idea of what we're going on about. Both are typical of the terrain in its present form.

I hate those pine clumps. I'm still digging tanks out of them in my TT object and reorienting the ambushes to the roads and cross roads. Worst part, you cannot see tanks from higher elevations to long range snipe or until you are well inside of 600 in some cases. Trying to drive through a mile of that in a tank takes for ever. Let alone see a tank to drop bombs on it. Being on a road or in an open field will be suicide now.

You'd be laughing your butt off if you'd seen me go around in circles while lost and trying to drive 3 miles to the next base the other day. This is not an MA terrain. It will be less of a problem when the terrain is rebuilt, but I've been hoping for this sort of density for many years. It's an option we don't have to use everywhere and I hope Hitech doesn't take it away. I think it definitely needs to be in the game.

For years, some have argued that travel off road should be slower then driving down a road. This will be massively true on AvAfinru. Tank nights will need to be confined to the cities where there are nice open approaches and less cover.
Again, I will wait to rebuild it sometime after the rivers and roads are released.

Jaeger was going to modify the cloud file to ease up on the frame rate impact but I don't think he's done it yet.

I hope the new road tool when Hitech finishes it, has a simple generic road because of how realistic the terrains will now be. Hey, WW2 Eruo and russia tanking was about ambushing roads and open fields due to how thick young trees really do grow together following water.
